Free online WEBP to DAE converter

A 3D application that accepts only COLLADA may require a .dae file, but a WEBP image contains no 3D geometry to convert. The practical result is a DAE scene containing the WEBP as a texture on a plane, usually after changing the image to PNG for compatibility.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format used for web graphics, material textures, reference images, decals, and UI assets. Browsers, image editors, renderers, and asset pipelines create it; it commonly appears when an image has been downloaded from a website or exported from software such as Photoshop, GIMP, or Blender.

WEBP supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. It stores pixels only: no vertices, faces, UV layout, cameras, lights, or 3D scene metadata.

What the DAE format is

DAE is the filename extension for COLLADA, an XML-based interchange format for 3D scenes. A DAE file can describe meshes, materials, texture references, transforms, cameras, lights, and some animation data.

COLLADA is useful when moving a scene between compatible 3D programs, game tools, CAD viewers, and asset pipelines. It is not an image format, so a WEBP file cannot become a standalone 3D model merely by changing its extension.

How to actually convert WEBP to DAE

Using Blender

1. Open Blender and delete the default cube if it is not needed.
2. Add a surface with Add → Mesh → Plane.
3. Create a material in the Material Properties panel, then connect an Image Texture node to the material's Base Color input.
4. Open the WEBP image in the Image Texture node. If Blender or the destination program has trouble with WEBP, convert it first to texture.png or texture.jpg with an image editor, then load that file instead.
5. Adjust the plane dimensions, UV coordinates, material transparency, and orientation. Use the Shading workspace to confirm that the texture displays correctly.
6. Save the scene, then choose File → Export → Collada (.dae). Enable the export options for selected objects, textures, and material data when those options are available in the installed Blender version.
7. Keep the exported .dae file and its texture file together. Open the DAE in the target program and relink the image if the application reports a missing texture.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion does not recover depth, surface shape, or 3D detail from the image. A photograph, concept image, or texture remains flat unless you separately model geometry or use a photogrammetry or image-to-3D workflow.

DAE texture support varies between applications. Some readers ignore embedded materials, transparency settings, color management, or WEBP references, so PNG or JPEG is generally safer than WEBP for the exported texture. Relative file paths are more portable than absolute paths, and moving the DAE without its referenced image commonly produces an untextured plane.

Lossy WEBP should be decoded only once when possible; repeatedly converting between lossy formats can add artifacts. Use a sufficiently large source image because exporting it to DAE does not increase its pixel resolution.
