Free online GIF to DAE converter

A GIF may need conversion when a 3D application or asset pipeline accepts only COLLADA .dae files. Because GIF stores pixels rather than geometry, the useful result is usually a DAE scene containing the GIF as a texture on a flat mesh, not a converted 3D model.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster image format commonly used for short animations, indexed-color illustrations, interface graphics, and low-resolution previews. Image editors such as GIMP, Photoshop, and Krita can create GIF files; screen-recording tools, web browsers, and some 3D renderers also produce them as previews or animated textures.

A GIF contains pixel data, a limited palette of up to 256 colors per frame, optional 1-bit transparency, and possibly multiple frames with timing information. It does not contain vertices, faces, UV coordinates, cameras, lights, or 3D materials. A GIF therefore cannot be converted into a conventional 3D mesh without reconstructing geometry from its visual content.

What the DAE format is

DAE is the filename extension for COLLADA, an XML-based interchange format for 3D scenes. A DAE file can describe meshes, vertex attributes, UV maps, materials, textures, cameras, lights, skeletal data, and some animations.

COLLADA is useful when moving scene data between applications such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, SketchUp, and game or visualization tools that support the format. Its external texture references let a DAE scene use image files such as PNG or JPEG, but a GIF is not automatically transformed into mesh data.

How to actually convert GIF to DAE

Make a DAE with a static GIF image in Blender

1. Extract a frame from the GIF as a standard texture. ImageMagick can create a PNG from the first frame with magick input.gif[0] output.png. For an animated source, extract all frames with magick input.gif frame-%04d.png.
2. Open Blender and create a plane with Add → Mesh → Plane. Scale the plane to match the intended aspect ratio of output.png.
3. In the Shader Editor, create or select a material, add an Image Texture node, choose output.png, and connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. The default plane UVs are sufficient for a full-image texture.
4. Save the texture beside the Blender project. In the material settings, use an image format and color setting supported by the destination application; PNG is generally safer than GIF for DAE texture exchange.
5. Export the scene with File → Export → COLLADA (.dae). Enable selection-only export if the file should contain only the textured plane, and enable texture or material export options when available.
6. Keep output.png beside the exported scene.dae, or use Blender’s path-remapping or resource-packing options when the receiving application supports them. Open the DAE in the target program and verify the material and texture path.

Preserve the GIF animation as far as the target supports it

Import the extracted frame-0000.png, frame-0001.png, and later frames as an image sequence in Blender’s Image Texture node. Set the sequence frame count and playback rate to match the GIF, then preview the plane animation before exporting.

DAE export does not reliably preserve Blender image-sequence playback as a portable animated GIF texture. If the destination needs an animated result, export the frames separately, use a destination-specific material animation, or convert the animation to a format supported by that application. A DAE export can still preserve the plane and its static first-frame texture.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• GIF’s 256-color palette can produce banding, dithering, and color changes when used as a texture. Extracting to PNG preserves the decoded frame more reliably, although it cannot restore colors already lost in the GIF.
• GIF transparency is limited to one transparent palette entry. Check the DAE material’s alpha mode after export; many COLLADA readers ignore transparency settings or require a separate material adjustment.
• DAE normally references textures by path rather than embedding them. Deliver the DAE and texture files together, use relative paths, and avoid renaming the texture after export.
• Converting a GIF into a textured plane does not create depth, sculpted surfaces, camera perspective, or a usable 3D model of the subject. Geometry must be modeled separately if the destination requires a real object.
• COLLADA support varies between applications. Materials, transparency, modifiers, image sequences, and animation controllers may be simplified or discarded during import, so test the exported file in the exact target software.
