A WEBP file is a 2D image, so converting a DAE model requires rendering the 3D scene first. This is useful when a website, catalog, presentation, or messaging application accepts WEBP images but cannot display Collada models directly.

What the DAE format is

DAE is the filename extension for Collada Digital Asset Exchange, an XML-based 3D interchange format. It can store meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, object transforms, skeletal data, and animations.

3D applications and game tools such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, SketchUp, Cinema 4D, and older Google Earth or game-asset workflows may create or export DAE files. You typically encounter DAE when downloading a model from a 3D library, moving an asset between modeling programs, or importing content into a game engine.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format intended mainly for web and application graphics. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency through an alpha channel, and animation.

WEBP usually produces smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality. It is suitable for a rendered preview, thumbnail, product image, or turntable frame, but it cannot preserve editable meshes, materials, bones, cameras, or 3D animation from the DAE scene.

How to actually convert DAE to WEBP

Using Blender

  1. Install and open Blender, then choose File → Import → Collada (.dae).
  2. Select the DAE file and import it. Keep its associated texture files in their original relative folder structure when possible.
  3. Inspect the model in the viewport. Add a camera and at least one light if the imported scene does not contain them. Set the camera view with Ctrl+Alt+Num0 if a camera already exists.
  4. Choose a render engine under Render Properties. Eevee is faster for previews; Cycles can produce more physically accurate lighting.
  5. Set the output dimensions under Output Properties → Format. Select WebP as the file format and choose the color mode, quality, compression, and alpha options available in your Blender version.
  6. Render the selected view with Render → Render Image.
  7. In the render window, choose Image → Save As, set the filename extension to .webp, and save the rendered image.

For a command-line workflow, Blender can render a prepared scene with blender -b scene.blend -o //render -F WEBP -f 1. The DAE must first be imported and saved as a Blender scene, because the command does not automatically create camera, lighting, or material settings for an arbitrary Collada file.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the DAE file, select WEBP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. Because DAE is a 3D scene format, the service must render a view rather than merely rename or re-encode the file; check the preview, camera angle, and texture result before using the output.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A DAE-to-WEBP conversion is a rendering operation, not a direct format translation. The output represents one camera view at one resolution. Geometry, rigging, animation, and editable scene structure are discarded.

Missing textures commonly produce gray or untextured surfaces. DAE files may reference image files through relative paths, absolute paths, or embedded data; keep external textures beside the model and relink them in Blender through File → External Data → Find Missing Files when necessary.

Use lossless WEBP when crisp text, line art, or transparent edges matter. Use lossy WEBP for photographic renders and adjust the quality setting until compression artifacts around thin geometry and shadows are acceptable. Enable an alpha channel only when the render uses transparency, such as a transparent product cutout.

For a transparent background in Blender, enable Render Properties → Film → Transparent. Some DAE materials use shaders or effects that Blender cannot reproduce exactly, so compare the imported render with the source application when material accuracy matters. Animated DAE content normally becomes a single WEBP frame; preserving motion requires an animated image workflow and compatible source animation settings.
