Free online BLEND to WEBP converter

A BLEND file contains a Blender scene, while WEBP contains a flattened raster image. Convert the scene when you need a lightweight preview, thumbnail, or web-ready render that another application or device can display without Blender.

What the BLEND format is

BLEND is Blender's native project format. It can store meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, animation data, modifiers, compositor settings, and scene configuration in one file. Blender creates BLEND files, which you encounter when exchanging editable 3D projects, saving work, or archiving a scene.

A BLEND file is not itself a single image. Converting it to WEBP requires Blender to evaluate and render a selected scene, camera, frame, and lighting setup; the resulting WEBP does not retain editable geometry, materials, animation, or camera data.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format designed for efficient delivery on websites and in applications. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency through an alpha channel, and, in suitable software, animation.

WEBP usually produces smaller files than PNG for rendered previews and can preserve transparency, unlike JPEG. Use it for web thumbnails, portfolio previews, product renders, and image assets when the receiving software supports WEBP.

How to actually convert BLEND to WEBP

Render and save directly in Blender

1. Open the project in Blender with File → Open, then select the .blend file.
2. Choose the required camera in the scene and select the frame to render. Set the dimensions and resolution percentage under Output Properties.
3. Choose a render engine under Render Properties. Eevee is generally faster; Cycles can provide more physically based results but usually takes longer.
4. Render the image with Render → Render Image or press F12.
5. In the Render Result window, select Image → Save As, choose WebP as the file format, enter a filename such as render.webp, and save it.
6. Set the WebP quality in the save options. Enable lossless output when exact pixel preservation or clean transparency matters; use lossy quality for a smaller photographic render.

For a transparent result, enable Render Properties → Film → Transparent before rendering and save with alpha support. The visible background must otherwise be rendered into the image.

Convert a Blender-rendered intermediate image

If the installed Blender version does not offer WebP in its image save formats, render to PNG first using Image → Save As, then use the desktop cwebp utility:

cwebp -q 85 render.png -o render.webp

Use cwebp -lossless render.png -o render.webp for lossless compression. An online conversion option is available on 101convert.com for free without installing software, but it cannot replace Blender when the scene must be opened and rendered with specific camera, lighting, or material settings.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

WEBP conversion flattens the selected Blender view into one image. To preserve the 3D scene for later editing, keep the original BLEND and its external texture files; the WEBP is only a rendered output.

Lossy WebP quality around 80–90 is commonly suitable for previews, while lossless WebP avoids compression artifacts around text, thin geometry, and transparent edges at the cost of larger files. Check the result in the target browser, image editor, game engine, or catalog system because older software may not read WEBP.

A still BLEND render produces a still WEBP. Animation requires rendering frames and encoding them separately; Blender's ordinary image save operation does not automatically turn an animated scene into an animated WEBP.
