A 3D application may require a WEBP preview when an Alembic cache is too large or unsuitable for web display. Because ABC stores 3D scene data and WEBP stores 2D pixels, the conversion requires rendering the ABC scene rather than changing its file extension.

What the ABC format is

In 3D modeling, ABC normally means the Alembic format, stored with the .abc extension. Alembic contains time-sampled geometry, transforms, cameras, and sometimes animated point or particle data for exchanging caches between applications.

Blender, Autodesk Maya, SideFX Houdini, Cinema 4D, and Foundry Katana can create or import Alembic files. You commonly encounter ABC files when transferring an animated simulation, baked geometry, or a high-detail scene between modeling, animation, visual-effects, and rendering software.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format designed for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation; a static WEBP is suitable for a rendered model preview, thumbnail, catalog image, or documentation graphic.

WEBP usually produces smaller files than PNG for comparable web images, while retaining transparency when the export settings and application support an alpha channel. It cannot preserve meshes, materials, cameras, animation data, or editable 3D structure.

How to convert ABC to WEBP

Using Blender

  1. Open Blender and choose File → Import → Alembic (.abc).
  2. Select the ABC file and import it. For an animated cache, move the timeline to the frame you want to show.
  3. Add or import a camera, then frame the model with View → Align View → Align Active Camera to View, or position the camera manually.
  4. Add lights and materials if the Alembic file does not contain render-ready shading. Alembic commonly carries geometry but not the complete source application's material and lighting setup.
  5. Set the render resolution in Output Properties → Format, choose a transparent background in Render Properties → Film → Transparent if required, and render with Render → Render Image.
  6. Save the rendered image through Image → Save As and select WEBP if your Blender version offers it. Otherwise save a PNG and convert it with an image utility.

With ImageMagick, convert an intermediate render using:

magick render.png -quality 85 preview.webp

For a lossless export with transparency, use:

magick render.png -define webp:lossless=true preview.webp

Using the online converter

You can try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. This is suitable only if the service supports Alembic scene rendering or accepts an already rendered image; a basic format converter cannot represent 3D geometry as a WEBP image without choosing a camera, frame, lighting, and render settings.

Quality and limitations

A static WEBP represents one rendered viewpoint and one frame. To show ABC animation, render a sequence of frames and create an animated WEBP only with software that supports animated WebP output; the resulting file still contains pixels rather than editable 3D data.

Use a quality value around 80–90 for photographic or textured previews. Use lossless WebP when fine geometry edges, text, masks, or transparency must remain exact. Transparent renders can show dark or light halos if premultiplied-alpha handling differs between the renderer and the WebP encoder.

Importing the ABC file may fail or produce an incomplete scene when it depends on external textures, unsupported Alembic properties, missing frame ranges, or application-specific materials. Keep the original ABC file because converting it to WEBP permanently discards the 3D data.
