A GLB model must be rendered into a 2D image before it can be used where WebP is required, such as a website preview, catalog thumbnail, or lightweight shareable graphic. The conversion produces an image of the model, not a WebP file that retains editable 3D geometry.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary version of the glTF 3D format. A single GLB file can contain polygon meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, skinning data, and animations, which makes it suitable for web viewers, game engines, AR applications, and 3D asset exchange.

Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, Unity, Unreal Engine, and many CAD or online 3D tools can create or export GLB files. You may also encounter GLB files downloaded from model libraries or generated by applications using the glTF JavaScript ecosystem.

What the WEBP format is

WebP is a 2D raster image format. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and, in some workflows, animation. Compared with PNG or JPEG, WebP can produce smaller previews at similar visual quality, making it useful for web thumbnails, product images, documentation, and model listings.

Because WebP stores pixels rather than meshes, it cannot preserve the GLB model's geometry, materials as editable objects, animation controls, camera data, or scene hierarchy. Use it when a rendered view or texture image is needed rather than an interactive 3D asset.

How to actually convert GLB to WEBP

Using Blender

  1. Open Blender and choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf).
  2. Select the GLB file and import it. Rotate or scale the model if necessary, then position a camera so the required view is visible.
  3. Add a light or use an HDRI environment. Check the material appearance in rendered view; some GLB extensions, procedural materials, or real-time effects may not render identically in Blender.
  4. Choose a resolution in Output Properties → Format. For a web preview, 1200 × 1200 pixels or smaller is often sufficient.
  5. Render the image with Render → Render Image.
  6. In the Image Editor, select Image → Save As, enter a filename ending in .webp, choose WebP in the file-format options, set the quality or lossless mode, and save.

If the Blender version does not offer WebP in its image-saving options, render to model.png and convert it with ImageMagick:

magick model.png -quality 85 model.webp

Use -define webp:lossless=true instead of a quality value when preserving exact pixel data is more important than file size. To retain transparent background pixels, enable film transparency in Render Properties → Film → Transparent and save a format or conversion path that preserves alpha.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Upload the GLB, select WEBP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the rendered image if the service provides the required camera and preview settings. Since a GLB is a scene rather than a single flat picture, results depend on the converter's default camera, lighting, and support for the model's materials.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A static WebP contains one viewpoint. To show several sides of the model, render separate views such as front, side, and three-quarter images. A model animation cannot become an interactive WebP; an animated WebP requires rendering frames and encoding them as an animated image, with possible loss of 3D controls and high memory usage.

Lossy WebP quality around 80–90 is a practical starting point for previews. Use lossless WebP for sharp text, icons, or line details, but expect larger files. Transparent backgrounds require alpha support throughout the render and conversion process.

Textures embedded in the GLB may be downscaled or decoded differently by different software. Missing external resources are less common with GLB than with separate glTF files, but unsupported material extensions, Draco compression, and custom shaders can still change the rendered result.
