A STEP model contains 3D geometry, while WEBP stores 2D raster images, so this conversion is used to create a browser-ready preview, catalog image, documentation figure, or smaller shareable representation. The model must be opened and rendered from a chosen viewpoint; the resulting WEBP cannot be rotated or edited as CAD geometry.

What the STEP format is

STEP, usually identified by .step or .stp, is an ISO 10303 exchange format for precise 3D product data. It commonly stores boundary-representation solid and surface geometry, assemblies, colors, layers, and limited product structure.

Mechanical CAD applications such as SolidWorks, Siemens NX, CATIA, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion, FreeCAD, and Onshape create or import STEP files. You encounter them when exchanging parts between different CAD systems, downloading manufacturer models, or archiving engineering designs. STEP files are intended for modeling and manufacturing workflows, not direct display in web pages.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format supported by current web browsers and many image applications. It can store lossy or lossless RGB images and may include an alpha channel for transparency.

WEBP is useful for product thumbnails, CAD documentation, web-based model catalogs, and email attachments because it often produces smaller files than equivalent JPEG or PNG images. It contains pixels only; it does not retain STEP solids, measurements, assembly relationships, parametric history, or editable faces.

How to actually convert STEP to WEBP

Using FreeCAD and ImageMagick

1. Install FreeCAD and ImageMagick, then open the .step or .stp file in FreeCAD with File → Open.
2. Expand the model tree if the file contains an assembly, select the objects to display, and use View → Standard views or the navigation controls to choose the required angle.
3. Use View → Fit all to frame the model. Set display mode, background, edge visibility, and object colors before rendering.
4. Export an intermediate image with View → Save image.... PNG is a suitable intermediate because it preserves sharp edges and transparency. Use a large output size such as 2000 × 2000 pixels if the image will be resized later.
5. Convert the PNG to WEBP from a terminal:

For lossless output, use:

Some FreeCAD builds expose WEBP directly in the image export dialog. If .webp is available as an output type, select it and omit the ImageMagick step.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• This is a render-to-image conversion. A WEBP output is a flat view of the STEP model, not a format-preserving conversion.
• STEP files do not necessarily contain a preferred camera, lighting setup, or presentation background. The converter may use a default orientation, so verify the front, top, or isometric view.
• Use lossless WEBP or a high quality setting for thin edges, technical labels, and line drawings. Quality values around 85–95 are generally appropriate for photographic renders; lossless output avoids compression artifacts around CAD edges.
• Transparent backgrounds require an alpha-capable export path. If FreeCAD exports a solid background, remove it separately or render against the intended background.
• WEBP dimensions determine visible detail. Increasing compression quality cannot restore detail lost through a small pixel size.
• Keep the original STEP file when measurements, further editing, or a 3D viewer may be required. The WEBP should be treated as a preview or documentation asset.
