GLB files are common for distributing textured 3D assets, while RVT is required for work in Autodesk Revit. Because Revit does not convert a GLB into native BIM elements, the practical workflow is to import the mesh into a Revit project and save that project as an RVT file.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary form of glTF, a 3D format designed to package meshes, materials, textures, cameras, and animations in one file. It is commonly created by Blender, 3ds Max, Maya, SketchUp, game engines, web viewers, CAD export utilities, and 3D scanning or visualization systems.

GLB is optimized for displaying polygonal models rather than describing architectural objects. A building asset may therefore contain only triangulated surfaces, texture images, and transforms; it usually has no Revit categories, levels, walls, doors, parameters, or editable construction data.

What the RVT format is

RVT is Autodesk Revit's project file format. It stores a building information model containing architectural, structural, and MEP elements, views, sheets, schedules, materials, families, project settings, and relationships between model objects.

RVT is useful when the result must be opened, coordinated, documented, or scheduled in Revit. Its advantages over a mesh format are parametric elements, object classification, measurable project data, and native editing, but those capabilities cannot normally be recovered from a GLB automatically.

How to actually convert GLB to RVT

The most dependable desktop workflow uses Blender for GLB preparation and Revit for the final RVT file:

  1. Open the GLB in Blender with File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf).
  2. Check the model's units, axis orientation, origin, scale, normals, and excessive detail. Apply the required transforms with Object → Apply → All Transforms.
  3. Remove animation, hidden objects, duplicate geometry, and very dense components that are not needed in Revit. Separate objects that need different visibility or placement.
  4. Export an intermediate format that the installed Revit release can import. OBJ is usually suitable for mesh geometry through File → Export → Wavefront (.obj); use the OBJ export options to preserve object separation and apply modifiers when required.
  5. Start Revit with the required template using File → New → Project. Open a suitable 3D view, then use Insert → Import CAD and select the exported model.obj if OBJ import is available in that Revit release.
  6. Set the correct import units, positioning, orientation, and placement. Verify the scale against a known dimension before saving.
  7. Save the project with File → Save As → Project as converted-model.rvt.

OBJ support and import behavior vary between Revit versions. If the installed release does not import OBJ, use a Revit-compatible intermediate format such as SAT or DWG through a conversion-capable desktop application, then import it with Insert → Import CAD. A Revit add-in such as SimLab's GLTF/GLB importer can reduce intermediate-format problems when its version supports the installed Revit release, but it still imports display geometry rather than reconstructing native BIM objects.

For a genuine BIM result, use the GLB only as reference and model the required elements directly in Revit. Create walls, floors, roofs, doors, windows, structural members, and MEP systems with native tools or load suitable families, then save the completed project as RVT.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A mesh imported from GLB remains mesh or imported geometry inside Revit. It will not automatically become editable walls, doors, families, rooms, levels, or schedulable quantities. Converting the file extension or importing it into a project does not add BIM metadata.

GLB materials and embedded textures may be lost or require manual reassignment during OBJ, SAT, or DWG conversion. OBJ can preserve texture references only when its accompanying material and image files remain together; imported CAD geometry may preserve shape but not the original physically based material settings.

Large textured meshes can substantially increase RVT size and reduce view performance. Simplify the model before import, use a consistent unit system, and keep the source GLB and intermediate files with the project for later troubleshooting. Online converters generally do not produce native RVT files and are unsuitable for confidential projects; use a local Blender/Revit workflow instead.
