Convert RFA to RVT

A recipient may require an .rvt file to inspect a Revit family in a project workspace, coordinate it with other building elements, or add it to project documentation. Autodesk Revit can save an RFA as a standalone RVT, although loading the family into an existing project is usually the more useful workflow.

What the RFA format is

RFA is Autodesk Revit’s family format. It stores a reusable building component, such as a door, window, furniture item, fixture, structural connection, annotation symbol, profile, or title block, together with its parametric geometry and family behavior.

Architects, engineers, contractors, manufacturers, and BIM content libraries use RFA files. Revit creates and edits them in the Family Editor. An RFA is normally loaded into an RVT project rather than used as the project file itself.

What the RVT format is

RVT is Autodesk Revit’s project format. It can contain building elements, views, sheets, schedules, levels, grids, phases, materials, project settings, linked models, and coordination information.

An RVT provides a project context in which a family can be placed, viewed, scheduled, documented, and coordinated. Saving one family as an RVT does not create a complete building model or add project elements that were not present in the RFA.

How to save an RFA as an RVT

1. Install Autodesk Revit and use the release that created the RFA, or a newer release.
2. Open Revit and select File → Open → Family, then open the .rfa file.
3. In the Family Editor, select File → Save As → Project.
4. Choose a destination, enter a filename with the .rvt extension, and save the file.
5. Open the resulting RVT and check the geometry, views, materials, nested families, parameters, visibility settings, and host-dependent behavior.

This produces an RVT containing the family content as project content. It is suitable when a system specifically requires an RVT, but it is not the same as adding the family to an established architectural or engineering project.

How to place the family in an existing RVT

1. Open the destination project in Revit.
2. Select Insert → Load from Library → Load Family and choose the RFA.
3. Start the appropriate placement command, such as Architecture → Component, and place an instance in the model.
4. Use File → Save As if the modified project must be saved as a separate RVT.

This workflow preserves the relationship between the family and the destination project. For multiple files, load each family individually or automate loading and placement with the Revit API or Dynamo after testing the script against the target Revit release.

Compatibility and quality limitations

• Revit can upgrade an older RFA when opening it in a newer release. A file saved by a newer Revit release normally cannot be opened by an older release, so use the recipient’s version whenever possible.
• A saved family-project RVT will not automatically contain the levels, grids, sheets, linked models, project standards, or other context of an existing building project.
• Test nested families, shared parameters, formulas, type catalogs, materials, visibility settings, void cuts, and subcategories after saving or loading.
• Hosted, face-based, work-plane-based, and wall-hosted families may not behave as expected when treated as standalone project content. Verify their host relationships, orientation, insertion points, and cut openings in the destination project.
• Some RFA categories, including annotation and title-block families, are not ordinary 3D model components and cannot be used like architectural or structural families in every project view.
• RFA and RVT are native Revit formats. Generic desktop utilities and online converters generally cannot preserve their parametric behavior, constraints, relationships, or project metadata. No widely trusted online service provides a full-fidelity RFA-to-RVT conversion; avoid uploading proprietary BIM files to unknown services.
