Convert RFA to PDF

People convert an RFA when a client, printer, records system, or reviewer needs a fixed document that can be viewed without Revit. PDF preserves selected family views for sharing and printing, but it does not replace the editable family file.

What the RFA format is

.rfa is Autodesk Revit’s family-file format. It stores reusable building components such as doors, windows, furniture, fixtures, annotation symbols, profiles, and title blocks. Autodesk Revit and Revit LT open and edit RFA files, and manufacturers commonly distribute BIM content in this format.

An RFA is a parametric family definition rather than a page-layout document. It can contain multiple views and display configurations, so there is no single PDF representation until you choose the views, scale, visibility settings, and paper layout.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-page format for viewing, printing, sharing, and archiving. Revit PDF export can preserve page layout, vector linework, text, dimensions, and graphics independently of the recipient’s Revit installation. PDF does not normally preserve the RFA’s parameters, constraints, nested-family structure, materials, or 3D editability.

How to convert an RFA to PDF

Using Autodesk Revit

1. Open Revit and choose File → Open → Family, then select the .rfa file.
2. Open the required family views, such as plan, elevation, section, 3D, or drafting views. Set the detail level, visibility, crop region, view scale, visual style, and graphics before exporting.
3. For a multi-page document, load the family into a Revit project, place it in the required project views, and create a sheet with View → Sheet. Add a title block and arrange the views. A family file itself does not generally provide a project-style sheet layout.
4. On Revit versions with native PDF export, choose File → Export → PDF. Select the views or sheets, set the paper size and orientation, choose vector or raster processing where available, and save the PDF.

On releases without native PDF export, choose File → Print, select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows or an installed PDF printer such as Adobe Acrobat, select the views or sheets, configure the paper size and print range, and print to a PDF file. The exact export options vary by Revit release.

Using an online service

Generic online converters usually cannot interpret RFA correctly because it is a proprietary Revit family format, and they cannot reliably decide which views, parameters, or display settings belong in the PDF. Do not upload confidential manufacturer or project content to an unverified service. If an online provider explicitly lists RFA input, verify that it renders the required views before relying on it; for dependable output, use Revit locally. A web-based file viewer is not necessarily an RFA-to-PDF converter.

Quality and compatibility caveats

• Only selected and visible views are exported. A 3D view does not automatically include every elevation, section, parameter, or family configuration.
• Set the view scale, crop region, paper size, and orientation before printing. An uncropped family view can produce excessive margins or a component that is too small to read.
• Use vector output for crisp lines and selectable or searchable text when the view supports it. Shaded, realistic, transparent, or texture-heavy views may require raster processing, which can reduce sharpness and increase file size.
• Missing fonts, nested families, materials, textures, or other dependencies can change the appearance. Resolve Revit warnings and confirm the rendered views before delivery.
• PDF export creates a visual record, not an editable BIM model. Keep the original .rfa if later parameter editing, family loading, or design changes may be required.
