A BLEND file contains a Blender scene, while TIFF stores a rendered 2D image. Convert it when a print, publishing, image-editing, or archival workflow requires TIFF instead of an editable 3D scene.

What the BLEND format is

.blend is Blender’s native project format. It can contain meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, animation, simulations, render settings, and linked or packed assets. Blender creates and opens BLEND files; the format is normally encountered in 3D modeling, animation, visual effects, and rendering workflows.

A BLEND file is not itself a flat image. Converting it to TIFF requires rendering a selected frame or camera view, so the result contains pixels rather than editable geometry, lighting, or animation data.

What the TIFF format is

.tif and .tiff are raster image formats used in print production, scanning, compositing, scientific imaging, and long-term image storage. TIFF supports lossless compression, high bit depth, multiple color channels, and optional transparency, making it suitable when JPEG compression would reduce image quality.

TIFF is useful for a rendered Blender image that needs further editing in software such as Photoshop, GIMP, or another application that supports high-quality raster files. It does not preserve the 3D scene, object hierarchy, materials, camera controls, or animation.

How to convert BLEND to TIFF

The most reliable method is to render the scene in Blender and save the rendered result as TIFF:

  1. Open the file in Blender with File → Open and select the .blend file.
  2. Choose the required camera in the scene. Press NumPad 0 to inspect the active camera view, or select another camera and use View → Cameras → Set Active Object as Camera.
  3. Set the output dimensions and resolution in Output Properties → Format. Confirm the frame number if the scene is animated.
  4. Set the render engine and quality options in Render Properties, then render the frame with Render → Render Image or press F12.
  5. In the Render Result window, choose Image → Save As.
  6. Enter a filename ending in .tif or .tiff, choose TIFF as the file format, select the required color mode and bit depth, and click Save As Image.

For repeatable output, configure Output Properties → Output with a destination folder and choose TIFF under File Format, then use Render → Render Image or Render → Render Animation. Animation produces one TIFF per frame rather than one multi-frame TIFF in the usual Blender workflow.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • Use 16-bit TIFF when the image will undergo substantial color correction or compositing; use 8-bit TIFF for ordinary display or print workflows that do not require extra tonal precision.
  • Choose RGB or RGBA according to the destination. RGBA can retain Blender-rendered transparency, but the receiving application must support an alpha channel.
  • TIFF compression is usually lossless, but compatibility varies. LZW or ZIP compression reduces file size without changing pixels; uncompressed TIFF is larger and may be easier for older applications to read.
  • Rendered appearance depends on the active camera, render engine, lighting, color-management settings, resolution, and available textures. Missing external assets can produce blank materials or incomplete renders.
  • Saving the Render Result preserves only the selected rendered image. Keep the original BLEND file if the scene may need later editing or re-rendering.
