A TIFF is required when a 3D BREP model must be submitted to a document system, placed in technical documentation, or viewed on a device that cannot display CAD geometry. The conversion renders the model as a raster image; it does not preserve editable surfaces, solids, or measurements.
What the BREP format is
BREP means boundary representation: a solid or surface is stored as faces, edges, vertices, and the topological relationships between them. The .brep or .brp format is commonly associated with the Open CASCADE Technology (OCCT) kernel and applications built on it, including FreeCAD and OCCT utilities.
BREP files occur when a CAD system exports precise mechanical geometry without packaging a complete project, assembly, or parametric feature history. They are suitable for exchanging manufactured parts and surfaces between compatible CAD systems, but they require a geometry viewer or CAD application rather than a normal image viewer.
What the TIFF format is
TIFF is a raster image format used for technical drawings, documentation, scanning, archiving, and print workflows. It supports high bit depths, lossless compression such as LZW or Deflate, and metadata such as resolution and color profile.
A TIFF cannot contain the editable BREP topology. It stores only the pixels produced by a chosen camera view, display mode, lighting setup, and image resolution. Use TIFF when recipients need a high-quality static representation rather than a model they can rotate or measure.
How to convert BREP to TIFF
Using FreeCAD and ImageMagick
- Install FreeCAD and open the file through File → Open. Select the
.brepor.brpfile and confirm that the shape appears in the 3D view. - Set the required presentation in FreeCAD: choose an axonometric or orthographic view, use View → Fit all, enable or disable edge lines, and select a suitable background and display mode.
- Save the rendered view with View → Save image.... FreeCAD commonly writes PNG, JPG, or BMP rather than TIFF, so save an intermediate file such as
part.png. - Convert the intermediate image with ImageMagick:
magick part.png -compress lzw part.tif
To add print-resolution metadata, use:
magick part.png -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 -compress lzw part.tif
The -density setting changes the recorded print resolution; it does not add pixels. Set the output pixel dimensions in FreeCAD or with ImageMagick if the TIFF must meet a required width or height.
Using the built-in online converter
For a one-off file, you can upload the BREP on 101convert.com, select TIFF, and download the rendered result without installing software. Check the resulting camera view and resolution before using it in production documentation.
Quality and compatibility limitations
BREP files generally contain geometry but no reliable presentation information. The converter must choose a camera, background, edge visibility, and shading, so two TIFF files made from the same model can look different.
Use a large viewport or export resolution for fine edges and small holes. A 300 dpi TIFF is suitable for many print workflows, but the required pixel dimensions depend on the intended physical size. LZW or Deflate compression avoids the generation loss associated with JPEG compression.
A single TIFF normally represents one view. Create separate files for front, top, section, or isometric views unless the target application explicitly supports multipage TIFF. The resulting image cannot retain CAD units, selectable faces, hidden geometry, parametric history, or measurement accuracy; keep the original BREP alongside the TIFF when those properties matter.
