A JPG is useful when a CAD model must be placed in a report, browser page, email, or document that cannot display 3D geometry. Converting BREP to JPG renders the model as a two-dimensional image; it does not preserve editable faces, edges, measurements, or 3D navigation.

What the BREP format is

BREP, or boundary representation, describes a solid or surface through its topology and geometry: vertices, edges, faces, shells, and their relationships. It is used by CAD kernels to represent precise mechanical parts, assemblies, and surfaces.

Files commonly use .brep or .brp and are associated with the Open CASCADE Technology (OCCT) modeling kernel. FreeCAD, Open CASCADE-based applications, CAD Exchanger, and engineering software can create or read BREP files. You typically encounter BREP when exchanging precise CAD geometry between modelers or when a native project is exported for downstream engineering work.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster-image format. It stores pixels rather than CAD geometry, so it is suitable for previews, documentation, web pages, email attachments, and office documents.

JPG files are small and widely supported, but lossy compression can blur thin edges, annotations, and high-contrast technical linework. JPG is appropriate for shaded model views and general-purpose illustrations; PNG is usually better for screenshots containing fine lines or text.

How to convert BREP to JPG

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the BREP-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com; the service can be used without installing desktop software.
  2. Upload the .brep or .brp file and choose JPG as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the rendered image when processing finishes.

The result is a rendered view, so the converter must choose or generate a camera angle, background, lighting, and display style. If the file contains several solids, check whether the output includes the complete model.

Using FreeCAD for control over the view

  1. Open FreeCAD and choose File → Open, then select the BREP file.
  2. In the 3D view, use the fit command to frame the part and select an axonometric, front, top, or other required view.
  3. Set the display mode, background, visibility, and object colors in the View properties. Hide construction geometry or unwanted solids before rendering.
  4. Save the view as a PNG using FreeCAD's image-capture command or a system screenshot.
  5. Convert the PNG to JPG with an image editor, or with ImageMagick: magick input.png -quality 92 output.jpg.

For repeatable exports, FreeCAD's Python console can capture a fixed-size view: Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("output.png", 2400, 1800, "Current"). Convert the resulting PNG to JPG afterward because PNG capture preserves line detail better during the rendering step.

Quality and compatibility limits

A BREP file may contain precise geometry but no camera, material, color, lighting, or annotation settings. Different viewers can therefore produce different JPGs from the same source. Set the desired orientation and visibility before export.

Image dimensions determine usable detail: use at least 1600 pixels across for ordinary documentation and more for large technical drawings. A JPG cannot retain selectable edges, CAD layers, tolerances, hidden geometry, or scale. Use STEP, IGES, native CAD, or another 3D format when the recipient needs to inspect or edit the model.

If the output contains thin edges or text, use a high quality setting such as -quality 92 or export PNG instead. A BREP file that is corrupt, unsupported, or made only of incomplete surfaces may fail to render or produce an incomplete image.
