IFC models must often be turned into JPG images for email attachments, reports, presentations, web pages, or devices that cannot display 3D BIM data. The conversion creates a 2D snapshot of a selected model view; it does not preserve the IFC model's objects, properties, or editability.

What the IFC format is

IFC, or Industry Foundation Classes, is an open BIM format for exchanging 3D building information between architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and construction applications. An IFC file can contain geometry, building-storey hierarchies, object classifications, materials, quantities, relationships, and metadata.

Programs such as Revit, Archicad, Allplan, Tekla Structures, Vectorworks, and many other BIM applications export IFC files. You encounter .ifc files when coordinating models between different vendors, reviewing contractor submissions, checking clash information, or archiving an interoperable building model.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster-image format suited to rendered views, drawings, thumbnails, reports, websites, and ordinary image viewers. It is widely supported, produces relatively small files, and allows adjustable compression, but it does not contain 3D geometry or BIM metadata.

Use JPG when the recipient needs a static visual such as a floor-plan view, elevation, perspective, section, or coordination screenshot rather than an interactive model. PNG is usually better for sharp linework, text, or transparent backgrounds, but JPG is often smaller and more convenient for photographs and shaded renders.

How to convert IFC to JPG

Using the built-in converter

  1. Open the IFC-to-JPG conversion page on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload building.ifc from your computer.
  3. Choose JPG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting building.jpg when processing finishes.

This method requires no installed BIM viewer. Because an IFC model can contain many objects and views, the service may use a default camera or generate an image from the model's available presentation; inspect the result before using it in a report.

Using a desktop BIM or 3D application

For control over the camera, visibility, background, and image resolution, open the IFC in an IFC-capable application such as Blender with the Bonsai BIM add-on, FreeCAD with IFC support, or a dedicated IFC viewer that provides image export.

  1. Import building.ifc through the application's IFC import command.
  2. Hide unnecessary categories, isolate the required storey or elements, and set the desired orthographic or perspective camera.
  3. Adjust materials, lighting, background, and viewport resolution.
  4. Use the application's image or render export command, such as Render → Render Image followed by Image → Save As, and select JPEG.
  5. Set the JPEG quality if available; use a high setting for printed reports and a lower setting for email or web delivery.

Quality and compatibility limitations

IFC-to-JPG conversion is a 3D-to-2D rendering operation, not a direct format translation. The JPG cannot be rotated, measured, filtered by object type, or edited as an IFC model.

Camera position determines which geometry appears, and hidden layers, unsupported IFC entities, missing textures, incorrect units, or an unavailable rendering engine can change the output. For technical drawings, export at a sufficiently large pixel size and verify labels, dimensions, line weights, and model orientation before distribution.

JPEG compression can blur fine lines and text. Keep the original IFC, and use PNG or PDF instead when lossless linework, transparent backgrounds, or document-scale printing is required.
