IFC models are often converted to JPEG when a project view must be shared in a report, attached to email, displayed on a device without BIM software, or used as a simple image preview. The conversion produces a rendered or captured view of the model, not an editable 3D file.

What the IFC format is

IFC, or Industry Foundation Classes, is an open BIM exchange format for building and infrastructure data. It can contain 3D geometry, building elements, materials, spatial structure, quantities, classifications, and object relationships.

Programs such as Autodesk Revit, Archicad, Tekla Structures, Allplan, Vectorworks, and other BIM applications create or export IFC files. You encounter IFC when exchanging a coordinated model between different design systems, reviewing consultant models, or archiving project data independently of a specific vendor.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a compressed raster image format suited to photographs, rendered model views, screenshots, reports, web pages, and email attachments. It is widely supported and usually much smaller than a rendered lossless image such as PNG.

JPEG stores pixels rather than model geometry. It cannot retain IFC objects, layers, measurements, BIM properties, camera navigation, or editability, and it does not support transparent backgrounds.

How to actually convert IFC to JPEG

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the IFC-to-JPEG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .ifc file and choose JPEG as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .jpg file when processing finishes.

This method requires no installed software, but the result depends on how the converter interprets the IFC model and selects its camera, projection, lighting, and visible objects. Use a desktop viewer when the exact viewpoint or presentation quality matters.

Using a desktop BIM viewer or Blender

  1. Open the IFC file in an IFC-capable viewer, such as BIMvision, or import it into Blender using the Bonsai IFC add-on.
  2. Wait for the model and materials to load, then hide unnecessary disciplines, sections, grids, annotations, or surrounding geometry.
  3. Set the required camera angle. Use orthographic projection for technical elevations and perspective projection for presentation views.
  4. Choose the output resolution, background, shadows, and edge display. In Blender, use the Output Properties panel to set the resolution and JPEG quality.
  5. Render or export the view using the program's image command, such as Render → Render Image, then save it as model-view.jpg.

If the viewer has no JPEG export, use File → Export or its image-capture command. A full-screen screenshot is a fallback, but it is limited by the display resolution and may include interface elements.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

IFC-to-JPEG conversion is a visualization process, not a geometric format conversion. A single JPEG normally represents one camera view; create several images if the project requires plans, elevations, sections, or multiple building sides.

Set the image dimensions before rendering. A 1920 × 1080 image is suitable for screen sharing, while printed drawings generally need a larger render or a vector/PDF export instead. JPEG compression can create artifacts around thin lines, text, and high-contrast edges; use a high quality setting, typically 90–100, for technical views.

JPEG has no transparency, so transparent model backgrounds are replaced with a solid color. It also does not preserve IFC coordinates, object names, material definitions, quantities, or hidden-object information. Keep the original IFC alongside the JPEG when recipients may need to inspect or edit the model.
