Convert DAE to SKP

A DAE model needs conversion when it must be edited in SketchUp or delivered as the native .skp format. Importing the COLLADA file into a compatible SketchUp desktop edition and saving it as an SKP file is usually the most reliable route.

What DAE contains

DAE is the filename extension for COLLADA, an XML-based interchange format for 3D scenes. It can describe meshes, transforms, cameras, lights, materials, textures, and animation references, so it is commonly used to exchange assets between modeling, animation, CAD, and game applications.

A DAE file may reference texture images stored separately. Keep the original DAE and its texture folders together during import; missing references can produce an untextured model.

What SKP provides

SKP is SketchUp's native project format. It preserves SketchUp-specific data such as groups, components, scenes, styles, dimensions, tags, and model settings more accurately than an interchange format. SKP is therefore suited to continued editing in SketchUp, but it is less broadly supported by non-SketchUp software than DAE.

Convert DAE with SketchUp desktop

Use a desktop edition whose current import list includes COLLADA; SketchUp Pro or Studio for desktop is the dependable choice. Do not assume that the free SketchUp web version can import DAE: its available import and export formats vary by product and subscription, and DAE support is not generally included in the free web workspace.

1. Copy the .dae file and all referenced texture images to a working folder. Do not rename or move the texture files after starting the import.
2. Open SketchUp Desktop and choose File → Import.
3. Set the file-type filter to COLLADA Files (*.dae), select the file, and open it.
4. Choose the available import options, such as merging coplanar faces or preserving the component hierarchy, then confirm the import.
5. Check the model's scale, orientation, face directions, groups, materials, and texture placement. Correct any problems before saving.
6. Choose File → Save As, select SketchUp Model (*.skp), and save the converted file. Select an older SketchUp version only when the recipient requires it.

The import is a reconstruction of the scene, not a container conversion. SketchUp does not preserve every COLLADA feature, and unsupported animation, camera, lighting, shader, rigging, or scene metadata may be discarded.

Browser and third-party options

CAD Exchanger Cloud is an online CAD conversion option that can be used when its current format list and subscription support both DAE input and SKP output. Upload only non-sensitive models, confirm the output format before conversion, and inspect the resulting file in SketchUp. Online services can remove textures, hierarchy, animation, or materials, and their format support can change.

Many general services, including CloudConvert, support DAE conversion to formats such as OBJ, STL, GLB, or FBX but do not necessarily offer SKP output. A service that accepts DAE is not automatically a DAE-to-SKP converter; verify that SKP is the target format before uploading.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Large DAE meshes can import as thousands of individual faces or objects, increasing SKP size and reducing SketchUp performance.
• DAE unit metadata is not always interpreted consistently. Measure a known dimension after import and rescale the model if necessary.
• Textures may fail when paths are absolute, files are missing, or the importer does not support the referenced image or material type.
• Normal direction, smoothing, transparency, UV mapping, and physically based materials can change during import.
• Save a copy in the SketchUp version used for editing. Newer SKP files may not open in older SketchUp releases, so test the saved file with the recipient's version.
