Free online TXT to 3MF converter

A 3MF file is required by some 3D-printing workflows and slicers, but a TXT file normally contains only unstructured characters rather than a 3D model. Conversion works only when the TXT file contains recognizable geometry or a supported coordinate format; ordinary notes, logs, and source code cannot become a printable model without additional modeling steps.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text container with no standard structure for vertices, faces, materials, units, or printer settings. It is created by text editors, CAD and engineering applications, scripts, measurement devices, and data-export tools, and commonly appears as notes, coordinate lists, logs, configuration files, or machine-readable data.

A TXT file can describe geometry if it uses a defined syntax such as XYZ point coordinates, polygon records, OpenSCAD source, or another application-specific format. The .txt extension alone does not identify which syntax is present.

What the 3MF format is

3MF is a ZIP-based 3D-printing format that stores one or more mesh objects, object relationships, units, and optional materials, colors, thumbnails, and print settings in an XML-based package. It is designed for exchanging printable models between CAD software, slicers, and manufacturing tools.

Compared with STL, 3MF can preserve units and grouped objects without relying on separate sidecar files. A 3MF package can also carry colors and slicer metadata, although software support for optional extensions differs.

How to actually convert TXT to 3MF

First inspect the TXT file in a code editor or plain-text editor. Identify whether it contains a documented 3D format, such as vertex and face records, or only prose and unrelated data. Do not rename the extension and expect a valid 3MF file; renaming changes no file content.

If the TXT contains coordinates in a format supported by your 3D software, import it there and create a mesh:

1. Open the application that generated the TXT file, or use a CAD/modeling program that documents the same syntax.
2. Import the file through File → Import, selecting the matching point, curve, mesh, or script format. If the program has no TXT importer, convert the records to a supported intermediate format such as OBJ, PLY, or STL with a custom script.
3. Build closed surfaces from the imported points or profiles, remove duplicate vertices, and check the model for non-manifold edges and inverted normals.
4. Set the correct unit scale. Coordinate lists often have no unit metadata, so a model may import as millimeters when it was intended to be inches or meters.
5. Export or save the repaired model through File → Export → 3MF. In a slicer, use File → Import followed by File → Export or Save project, depending on the application.

For a TXT file that contains OpenSCAD source, save it with the expected .scad extension, open it in OpenSCAD, render it with F6, then use File → Export → Export as 3MF if that version provides 3MF export. For custom coordinate data, write or use a parser that maps records to vertices and faces before opening the resulting mesh in Blender, FreeCAD, or another 3D application.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Plain TXT has no universal geometry schema, so two files with the same extension may require entirely different import procedures. A list of points is not a solid: it must be connected into edges and faces, and a printable object generally needs a closed, manifold volume.

Verify dimensions after conversion in the slicer, then run its repair or validation tool. Check that the exported 3MF opens in the target slicer and that optional colors, materials, supports, and print profiles survived; basic mesh geometry is more widely supported than application-specific 3MF metadata.
