A customer or production workstation may need a PDF because it lacks SOLIDWORKS, requires a printable drawing, or needs a stable revision for review and archiving. The correct method depends on whether the result must be a dimensioned drawing, an interactive 3D model, or a simple view of the part.
What the SLDPRT format is
.SLDPRT is the native part-file format created by SOLIDWORKS. It stores a parametric 3D part, including sketches, feature history, dimensions, materials or appearances, configurations, and other data used to regenerate the model.
SOLIDWORKS part files are used in mechanical engineering, product design, manufacturing, supplier exchanges, and SOLIDWORKS assemblies. Full editing normally requires SOLIDWORKS or compatible CAD software; changing the filename extension does not convert the file.
What the PDF format is
PDF preserves page layout, text, vector graphics, raster images, and print settings across operating systems. It is suitable for sending drawings to customers, attaching documentation to production orders, printing views, and archiving released revisions.
A standard PDF is not a parametric CAD model. It does not preserve feature history, sketches, editable model dimensions, mates, or native SOLIDWORKS configurations. A 3D PDF can contain an interactive representation of the model, but it still does not provide the original file's editability and requires a viewer with 3D PDF support.
How to convert SLDPRT to PDF
Using SOLIDWORKS for a dimensioned drawing
- Open
part.SLDPRTin SOLIDWORKS and force a rebuild withCtrl+Q. Resolve rebuild errors before creating output. - Select File → Make Drawing from Part, choose a drawing template, and set the sheet size.
- Insert the required views with View Layout → Model View. Add projected, section, detail, or auxiliary views as required.
- Add dimensions, tolerances, notes, material information, and revision data. Use a drawing rather than a model screenshot when the PDF will support manufacturing or inspection.
- Select File → Save As, choose
Adobe Portable Document Format (*.pdf), select the required sheet or sheets, and save.
Publishing an interactive 3D PDF
- Open the part in a SOLIDWORKS installation with a valid SOLIDWORKS MBD license and add-in.
- Prepare the required configurations, model views, displayed dimensions, annotations, section cuts, and visibility settings.
- Choose MBD → Publish to 3D PDF. The exact command location can vary by SOLIDWORKS release and interface customization.
- Select a 3D PDF template, review the preview, and publish the file. Test it in Adobe Acrobat Reader or another viewer that supports embedded 3D content.
Creating a quick visual PDF with eDrawings
eDrawings Viewer can open many compatible SLDPRT files for inspection and print the displayed view through a system PDF printer. This produces a page containing the current rendered view, not a properly dimensioned engineering drawing. Set the orientation, display mode, section state, and paper size before printing.
Using an online CAD converter
A CAD-specific online service such as CAD Exchanger Cloud may provide SLDPRT viewing or PDF export, but available input versions and output types can change. Confirm that the service accepts the particular SOLIDWORKS version and produces the required kind of PDF; many browser tools create only a rendered page rather than a drawing or true interactive 3D PDF.
Online conversion uploads the geometry to a third-party server. Do not use it for confidential designs unless company policy permits the transfer. Online tools may discard feature history, configurations, annotations, drawing standards, materials, or exact line and dimension behavior.
Quality and compatibility limitations
- Choose the output type first: use a SOLIDWORKS drawing for dimensions and manufacturing information, a 3D PDF for interactive inspection, and a printed model view for a basic visual reference.
- PDF output reflects the active configuration, display state, hidden geometry, section cuts, orientation, and visibility settings at export time. Check each before saving.
- An unannotated model view does not contain reliable manufacturing dimensions and should not replace a released drawing.
- 3D PDF support varies by viewer. Adobe Acrobat Reader generally supports embedded 3D content, while many browser PDF viewers show only the page and omit the interactive model.
- Older SOLIDWORKS releases may not open files saved by newer releases. Use a compatible version for conversion, or request a neutral CAD format such as STEP alongside the PDF when further CAD exchange is required.
- Inspect the final PDF at intended print size. Export can alter line weights, substitute fonts, reduce shaded-image resolution, and change transparency or raster quality.
