How to convert sldprt to dwg file

AutoCAD, drafting systems, and some CNC or laser-cutting workflows require DWG instead of a native SOLIDWORKS part. The conversion is usually a 3D-model-to-2D-drawing operation, so it creates selected views and annotations rather than changing the file extension.

What the SLDPRT format is

.sldprt is SOLIDWORKS’ native format for an individual 3D part. It can contain sketches, features, dimensions, materials, configurations, bodies, and parametric design history. SOLIDWORKS assemblies use .sldasm files that reference part files, while SOLIDWORKS drawings use .slddrw.

SLDPRT files are exchanged by mechanical engineers, manufacturers, suppliers, and product-development teams. AutoCAD does not natively open them, and a DWG export normally does not retain the original feature tree, configurations, sketches, or SOLIDWORKS constraints.

What the DWG format is

.dwg is a CAD format associated with AutoCAD and supported by many drafting, engineering, and manufacturing applications. It commonly stores 2D lines, arcs, polylines, dimensions, annotations, blocks, layers, title blocks, and layouts; some DWG files also contain 3D objects.

DWG is appropriate when the recipient needs an editable 2D drawing, a plotted manufacturing document, or a profile for downstream CAD, CNC, or laser-cutting software. The DWG version matters: an older receiving application may not open a file saved in a newer version.

Convert with SOLIDWORKS

For a dimensioned engineering drawing, use SOLIDWORKS itself.

  1. Open the SLDPRT file and select the required configuration. Confirm units, model orientation, material state, and dimensions.
  2. Choose File → Make Drawing from Part/Assembly, then select a sheet size and drafting standard.
  3. Insert the required front, top, right, isometric, section, detail, or auxiliary views. Set hidden-line, shaded, and edge-display options for each view.
  4. Add dimensions, tolerances, center marks, notes, symbols, and a title block. Use Annotations → Model Items to insert model dimensions, then check their placement and tolerances manually.
  5. Save the drawing, choose File → Save As, and select DWG (*.dwg).
  6. In the DWG/DXF export options, select the required sheets, units, scale, mapping, and DWG version. Open the result in AutoCAD or a compatible viewer and check scale, lineweights, fonts, layers, and annotations.

This method gives control over the views and drafting entities that become part of the DWG. The exported file is a drawing, not an editable SOLIDWORKS model.

Export a profile or planar geometry

For a cutting profile or a single planar outline, select the required planar face or sketch and use File → Save As to choose DWG (*.dwg) or, often more appropriately, DXF (*.dxf). Available output depends on the SOLIDWORKS version and the selected object.

For sheet-metal work, create and activate the flat pattern before exporting. For other parts, create a sketch and use Insert → Sketch → Convert Entities to project the required edges. Remove construction geometry, confirm the correct plane and orientation, and check that every machining contour is closed.

Convert without SOLIDWORKS

CAD Exchanger Desktop and CAD Exchanger Web can also be considered when their current format matrix confirms both the specific SLDPRT input and the required DWG output. Test a representative file before purchasing or sending production data.

Online CAD conversion is suitable only when the service explicitly supports SLDPRT-to-DWG translation and identifies the resulting output type. A reputable service should state its supported SOLIDWORKS versions, file-retention period, deletion controls, and security practices. Do not upload confidential designs without checking those terms. A service that merely renames .sldprt to .dwg has performed no conversion.

If a converter can read the SLDPRT but cannot create a drafting DWG, export a 3D interchange file such as .step or .x_t instead, then create the drawing in a compatible CAD application. STEP or Parasolid preserves useful 3D geometry but does not replace a dimensioned 2D DWG.

Quality and compatibility checks

  • Geometry loss: a drawing DWG contains projected views and drafting entities, not the SOLIDWORKS feature history or parametric relationships.
  • Units and scale: verify millimetres or inches in both programs. Measure a known dimension in the DWG rather than relying only on the displayed sheet scale.
  • Annotations: missing fonts may be substituted, and SOLIDWORKS-specific symbols, tolerances, balloons, tables, and associativity may become plain text or lose editability.
  • Curves: splines and projected edges may become splines, polylines, arcs, or faceted approximations. Inspect profiles at high zoom before manufacturing.
  • Layers and line styles: review SOLIDWORKS DWG/DXF mapping so visible, hidden, center, construction, and dimension entities use usable layers, colors, and lineweights.
  • Orientation: compare every exported view with the source part; a correct scale does not prevent a view from being exported from the wrong plane.
  • Validation: check closed contours, remove duplicate or microscopic segments, and measure critical features in the receiving CAD or CAM application.

Will my SLDPRT feature tree and model history be kept in DWG?

No, the parametric feature tree, design history, mates, and editable feature parameters are not preserved. The DWG contains drawing geometry or exported CAD entities that can be edited, but not as native SLDPRT features.

Does SLDPRT to DWG keep the 3D model?

Not necessarily: the conversion may create 2D projected views, sections, or cutting profiles rather than a complete 3D model. If 3D entities are exported, their original feature intelligence and design history still will not be retained.

What settings matter when converting an SLDPRT into a DWG cutting profile?

Choose the correct view or planar face, drawing scale, units, and geometry precision. A cutting profile should contain clean, closed planar contours; curved or non-planar surfaces may be projected into arcs, splines, or incomplete edges instead.
