What the VRM format is

VRM is a humanoid-avatar format based on glTF. It packages a 3D mesh, armature, materials, textures, humanoid bone assignments, facial expressions, look-at settings, and spring-bone behavior for applications such as virtual reality, VTubing, and real-time character presentation.

VRoid Studio creates VRM avatars, and Unity projects commonly export them with the UniVRM package. You also encounter VRM files in avatar libraries and when downloading models made for VRChat or other compatible applications.

What the PMX format is

PMX is the newer model format used by MikuMikuDance. It stores a mesh, bones, morphs, rigid bodies, joints, materials, display groups, and other data needed for posing, animation, and physics in MMD.

PMX is useful when the destination program supports MMD models, PMX accessories, MMD motion files, or PMX-specific physics. Compared with the older PMD format, PMX supports more flexible bone and morph structures, Unicode names, additional material controls, and more detailed physics settings.

How to convert VRM to PMX

The most controllable desktop workflow uses Blender with the VRM Add-on and mmd_tools. Install versions of both add-ons that support your Blender release.

1. Open Blender and install the VRM Add-on through Edit → Preferences → Add-ons → Install. Enable the add-on after installation.
2. Install mmd_tools in the same preferences panel and enable it. Restart Blender if either add-on does not appear in the menus.
3. Import the source file with File → Import → VRM (.vrm). Select the VRM file and allow the add-on to create its armature, materials, textures, and avatar components.
4. Check the imported model in Pose Mode. Confirm that the armature deforms the body correctly, the feet are not rotated incorrectly, and the face meshes or shape keys are present.
5. If mmd_tools requires an MMD model structure, use its model conversion tools to convert the imported armature and mesh before export. Keep the generated MMD armature active and avoid applying transformations to individual bones.
6. Choose File → Export → MikuMikuDance Model (.pmx), select the model armature and mesh objects, and export to a new folder.
7. Open the resulting .pmx in MikuMikuDance or PMX Editor. Check the model's Japanese or Unicode names, texture paths, morphs, bone movement, rigid bodies, and joints before using it with motion data.

For a no-install option, 101convert.com provides a free online VRM-to-PMX conversion tool. Desktop conversion is preferable when you need to inspect materials, repair weights, edit bones, or preserve as much avatar behavior as possible.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The formats do not contain equivalent feature sets, so conversion is not lossless. VRM metadata such as license information, humanoid mappings, first-person settings, look-at behavior, and avatar permissions generally does not become PMX data.

VRM spring bones must be represented as PMX rigid bodies and joints; the converted physics may require manual tuning. PBR materials, transparency modes, outline effects, and shader features may also need replacement with MMD-compatible material settings.

VRM expressions can become PMX morphs, but their names, vertex ranges, and combined behavior may not map correctly. Test facial morphs individually and repair them in PMX Editor if necessary.

Verify every texture path after export. If textures were embedded in the VRM or stored in a source archive, the PMX exporter may write separate image files or retain paths that are invalid on another computer. Keep the .pmx, textures, and any exported sphere or toon textures together when sharing the model.
