Free online WEBP to TIF converter

A scanner, publishing application, archival system, or printer may require TIFF instead of WEBP. Converting makes the image usable in that workflow, but it cannot restore detail already removed by lossy WEBP compression.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format developed by Google for websites and applications. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, and often produces smaller files than comparable JPEG or PNG images. Browsers, content-delivery systems, Android applications, website publishers, and graphics software commonly create or deliver WEBP files.

What the TIF format is

TIF and TIFF are filename extensions for the same Tagged Image File Format. TIFF is common in scanning, printing, publishing, geographic imaging, medical imaging, and archival workflows because it can store high bit depths, embedded color profiles, multiple pages, and transparency or other extra image channels. LZW and ZIP compression are lossless, while uncompressed TIFF avoids compression altogether. These options generally produce much larger files than WEBP.

How to convert WEBP to TIF

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the WEBP to TIF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .webp file.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .tif file.

This option requires no installation and is suitable for non-confidential images. Use local software instead of uploading files containing private, regulated, or sensitive information.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick provides command-line conversion on Windows, macOS, and Linux after its desktop package is installed and the magick command is available.

1. Open a terminal or PowerShell window in the folder containing the source file.
2. Run magick input.webp -compress LZW output.tif, replacing both filenames as needed.
3. For an uncompressed file aimed at older software, run magick input.webp -compress None output.tif. This creates a larger file.

On Linux or macOS, a folder can be batch-converted with for f in *.webp; do magick "$f" -compress LZW "${f%.webp}.tif"; done. In Windows PowerShell, use Get-ChildItem *.webp | ForEach-Object { magick $_.FullName -compress LZW (Join-Path $_.DirectoryName ($_.BaseName + '.tif')) }.

Using GIMP

1. Open the image with File → Open.
2. Choose File → Export As and enter a filename ending in .tif.
3. Select Export, choose LZW or ZIP compression in the TIFF options when available, and confirm with Export.

Quality and compatibility limits

A lossy WEBP is decoded before it is written to TIFF, so LZW, ZIP, and uncompressed TIFF preserve the decoded pixels but do not recover detail discarded during the original WEBP export. Inspect the output dimensions, color mode, transparency, and embedded ICC profile before sending it to a printer or archival system.

WEBP files may contain animation. A normal single-page TIFF cannot represent animation; use a tool that explicitly exports frames or a multipage TIFF if every frame is required. TIFF can also contain 16-bit or higher channels, layers, tiles, pages, and alpha channels, but older applications may accept only baseline 8-bit RGB or CMYK TIFF. If the WEBP has no useful resolution metadata, set the required DPI or physical dimensions in the editor before printing or archiving.
