Windows applications, desktop shortcuts, and some favicon workflows require an ICO file instead of a TIFF image. Conversion reduces the source to icon-sized rasters and can package several resolutions so the target software can select a suitable one.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a raster format used for scanned documents, print production, publishing, photography, and archival images. It supports high bit depths, lossless compression such as LZW and ZIP, optional transparency, embedded color profiles, and multiple pages or frames.

Scanners, multifunction printers, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, and document-management systems commonly create or use TIFF files. TIFF preserves image data for editing and archiving, so a file is often much larger than an icon. TIFF does not itself provide the multiple icon resolutions or application-specific structure expected by ICO consumers.

What the ICO format is

ICO is a Windows icon container used for application icons, folders, shortcuts, and favicon files. One ICO can contain separate raster images at different dimensions and color depths; Windows or another program can choose the most appropriate embedded image for the display size.

Common dimensions include 16×16, 24×24, 32×32, 48×48, 64×64, 128×128, and 256×256 pixels. Modern ICO files may store PNG-compressed image data, which reduces file size and preserves transparency. ICO is not a vector format and is unsuitable for retaining a detailed TIFF at full resolution; it works best with a simple subject that remains recognizable when reduced.

How to convert with desktop software

ImageMagick is useful for repeatable conversions and ICO files containing several resolutions. After installing it, run:

magick input.tiff -auto-orient -colorspace sRGB -define icon:auto-resize=16,24,32,48,64,128,256 output.ico

Replace input.tiff and output.ico with the actual filenames. -auto-orient applies the TIFF orientation tag, -colorspace sRGB converts the colorspace for broader display compatibility, and icon:auto-resize requests the listed embedded sizes.

For a multipage TIFF, select one page explicitly, for example:

magick 'input.tiff[0]' -auto-orient -colorspace sRGB -define icon:auto-resize=16,24,32,48,64,128,256 output.ico

The first page becomes the icon. Create a separate ICO for another page if the source contains several documents or frames.

For a single 256-pixel icon with a square canvas, use:

magick input.tiff -auto-orient -colorspace sRGB -resize 256x256 -gravity center -background none -extent 256x256 output.ico

This preserves the aspect ratio and adds transparent padding when the source already has usable transparency. -background none does not remove an opaque background from the original image.

In GIMP, open the file with File → Open, crop or scale it to the required square dimensions through Image → Scale Image, then choose File → Export As and use a filename ending in .ico. GIMP can export an ICO from the current image; use ImageMagick or the converter when one file must contain a deliberately selected set of resolutions.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Conversion rasterizes the selected TIFF image. It does not retain TIFF pages, editing layers, CMYK workflow data, high bit depth, print metadata, or the original resolution inside the ICO.
• Use an RGB or sRGB source for broad compatibility. Preserve an existing alpha channel when transparent edges are required; otherwise choose a background color deliberately.
• Use a square composition or add transparent padding. Stretching a rectangular image to a square distorts it, while cropping can remove important content.
• Include several sizes for Windows icons used at different display scales. At minimum, 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48 cover many small interface contexts; 256x256 supports larger modern displays.
• Some older programs accept only legacy BMP-style ICO images and reject PNG-compressed frames. If the target software does not recognize the result, export a legacy-compatible ICO or provide a separate lower-resolution frame.
• Inspect the icon at its actual display sizes after conversion. Fine text, photographic detail, and thin lines in the TIFF may disappear when reduced to 16 or 32 pixels.
