What the TIFF format is
TIFF, or Tagged Image File Format, stores raster images and is commonly used for scanned sheet music because it supports lossless compression, high resolution, grayscale images, and multipage documents. Scanners, library digitization systems, notation software, and graphics applications can create TIFF files; you may encounter one when receiving archival scores or scans from a printer or music collection.
A TIFF contains pixels rather than musical objects. It does not inherently identify staff lines, pitches, note values, rests, lyrics, dynamics, or voices, so changing the filename extension cannot produce a valid editable score.
What the MUSICXML format is
MUSICXML is an XML-based interchange format for digital scores. It stores structured notation such as measures, notes, durations, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, articulations, lyrics, dynamics, parts, and layout information.
Notation programs including MuseScore, Dorico, Sibelius, Finale, and many educational or engraving applications can import or export MUSICXML. Compared with a page image, it allows notes to be transposed, corrected, played back, rearranged, extracted into parts, and re-engraved. The format is generally intended for interchange rather than preserving the exact visual appearance of the scanned page.
How to actually convert TIFF to MUSICXML
Because this is optical music recognition (OMR), use a tool that analyzes notation rather than a general image converter.
- Prepare the scan at 300–600 dpi. Crop empty borders, deskew tilted pages, remove speckles, and use a clean grayscale or black-and-white image. Keep pages in reading order.
- For a no-installation workflow, use the converter on 101convert.com if it accepts your TIFF and offers MUSICXML as the output format. Upload the file, select
MUSICXML, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Review the exported score in notation software before using it as an authoritative transcription. - For local OMR, open the TIFF in Audiveris. Use Book → Add a sheet or the equivalent image-import command, run page recognition, inspect detected systems and measures, correct recognition errors, then choose Book → Export → MusicXML. Audiveris is suitable for printed, reasonably clean monophonic or polyphonic scores and provides editable recognition data before export.
- Open the exported file in MuseScore or another notation editor using File → Open or File → Import. Compare every page with the TIFF, correct the notation, and save through File → Export as the MUSICXML version required by the destination application.
Commercial OMR applications such as SmartScore and ScanScore can be alternatives when Audiveris misreads a complex score. Their usual workflow is the same: import the image, run recognition, proofread the detected notation, and export MUSICXML.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
OMR output is an interpretation, not a pixel-preserving conversion. Common errors include incorrect rhythms, missed accidentals, merged or split beams, wrong voices, misplaced dots, inaccurate tuplets, and misread lyrics. Handwritten music, faded scans, piano scores with dense voices, tablature, ornaments, unusual notation, and scores with overlapping objects require especially careful correction.
MusicXML support varies by application and version. If the receiving program requests a specific MusicXML version or compressed package, export that variant; uncompressed files commonly use .musicxml, while compressed MusicXML packages commonly use .mxl. Importing may alter spacing, fonts, line breaks, playback settings, and page layout even when the musical content is correct.
