A .gtp file may open only in Guitar Pro or compatible tablature software, while notation programs such as MuseScore commonly use MusicXML for interchange. Converting it preserves the written score in an editable format for arranging, printing, or sharing with other composition software.

What the GTP format is

.gtp is a binary Guitar Pro tablature file associated primarily with Guitar Pro versions 1, 2, and 3. It stores standard notation, guitar tablature, tuning, rhythm values, tempo, instruments, lyrics, and some performance markings.

Older guitar-tab collections frequently contain GTP files, and current Guitar Pro releases or TuxGuitar can usually import them. The format is proprietary rather than a general notation-exchange standard, so other music applications may not read it directly.

What the MUSICXML format is

MusicXML is an XML-based interchange format for notated music. It represents measures, pitches, durations, voices, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, articulations, dynamics, lyrics, and tablature in a form supported by applications such as MuseScore, Dorico, Sibelius, Finale, and TuxGuitar.

MusicXML is suitable for editing and score transfer because it describes notation rather than recorded audio. Files normally use .musicxml or .xml; compressed MusicXML packages use .mxl.

How to convert GTP to MUSICXML

Using TuxGuitar

  1. Install and open TuxGuitar, then choose File → Open and select the .gtp file.
  2. Check the imported score for the correct tuning, capo, tempo, time signatures, repeat signs, voices, and measure boundaries. Correct errors before exporting.
  3. Choose File → Export → MusicXML, select an output filename such as score.musicxml, and save it.
  4. Open the exported file in the target notation program and inspect the first and last measures, tuplets, lyrics, tablature, and layout.

TuxGuitar is the practical desktop option when the source is an older Guitar Pro file and a compatible Guitar Pro installation is unavailable.

Using Guitar Pro

  1. Open the GTP file in a Guitar Pro version that supports its file generation.
  2. Review the imported notation and playback, especially bends, slides, harmonics, palm muting, repeats, and alternate tunings.
  3. Use File → Export → MusicXML and save the result as .musicxml or .xml, depending on the version.
  4. Reopen the exported file in the destination application because the export may use different defaults for voices, page layout, and tablature.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software: upload the GTP file, choose MUSICXML as the target format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Use a desktop application instead for private compositions or files that require detailed correction after import.

Quality and compatibility limitations

GTP-to-MusicXML conversion transfers notation data, not Guitar Pro's complete playback model. Effects such as bends, slides, tremolo picking, grace notes, dead notes, palm muting, harmonics, and rhythm-guitar playback may be simplified, omitted, or interpreted differently by the exporter.

Older GTP files can also lose page formatting, custom fonts, sound settings, mix changes, and some repeat behavior. Guitar tablature and standard notation generally transfer more reliably than application-specific playback instructions.

After conversion, verify alternate tunings, string assignments, voices, tuplets, repeats, rests, lyrics, and measure numbering in the destination program. Saving as .mxl reduces the file package size but does not restore information lost during conversion.
