What the GTP format is
GTP is a Guitar Pro tablature file, mainly associated with Guitar Pro versions 1 through 4. It stores notes, guitar tablature, timing, tempo, instruments, effects, lyrics, and score layout for composition and playback.
You may encounter GTP files in downloaded guitar tabs, rehearsal material, and older projects created with Arobas Music Guitar Pro. Guitar Pro and the open-source TuxGuitar can open many GTP files, although complex effects or newer notation features may not transfer perfectly.
What the OGG format is
OGG usually means an Ogg container holding Vorbis audio in music applications. It is a compressed, lossy audio format suited to playback, web distribution, games, and applications that support open codecs.
OGG is substantially smaller than uncompressed WAV and normally preserves more quality than MP3 at a similar bitrate, but it does not retain editable notation, individual tracks, lyrics, or instrument events. The resulting file is an audio performance generated from the GTP score.
How to actually convert GTP to OGG
The reliable desktop workflow is GTP → MIDI → rendered WAV → OGG. MIDI preserves musical events, while the WAV rendering supplies the actual sound required by an OGG encoder.
- Open the
.gtpfile in Guitar Pro or TuxGuitar. Check tuning, tempo, repeats, muted tracks, and playback ranges before exporting. - Export the score as MIDI. In TuxGuitar, use File → Export → MIDI. In Guitar Pro, use the corresponding File → Export → MIDI command; the exact wording varies by version.
- Render the MIDI file to WAV with MuseScore, FluidSynth, or another MIDI synthesizer. MuseScore can open the MIDI, assign a soundfont, and use File → Export to create a WAV file. FluidSynth can render from a command line, for example:
fluidsynth -ni soundfont.sf2 composition.mid -F composition.wav -r 44100. - Encode the WAV as OGG with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i composition.wav -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 composition.ogg. The Vorbis quality scale normally runs from 0 to 10;-q:a 5is a practical general-purpose setting. - Play
composition.oggin the target application and verify that all tracks, repeats, tempo changes, and endings were rendered as expected.
You can also upload the file to the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Because GTP is notation rather than audio, a service must interpret the score and synthesize it; unsupported Guitar Pro effects, sound choices, or repeat structures may produce a different result.
Quality and compatibility limitations
A GTP file does not contain a microphone recording or a fixed audio waveform. The rendered sound depends on the synthesizer, soundfont, MIDI mapping, velocity handling, and support for bends, slides, harmonics, palm muting, and other tablature effects.
Keep the WAV file if you may need further editing, because converting that file to OGG applies lossy compression. For a smaller file, use Vorbis quality 4–6; for archival or later mastering, retain WAV or export a lossless format instead. Some older players do not support OGG, so test compatibility before distributing the result.
