Publishing, scanning, and imaging applications may require a raster file instead of the EMZ graphics embedded in a Microsoft Office document. Converting the file to TIF/TIFF produces a pixel-based image that can be imported, printed, edited, or archived more broadly.

What the EMZ format is

EMZ is a gzip-compressed Enhanced Metafile (EMF). EMF stores Windows drawing instructions for lines, shapes, text, fills, and embedded bitmap elements rather than only a pixel grid.

Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint commonly create or package EMZ graphics when documents contain inserted Windows metafiles. EMZ files can also result from graphics copied from Office documents or extracted from Office document packages. Many image applications do not recognize the .emz extension directly because it is a compressed container around an EMF file.

What the TIF format is

TIF and TIFF are extensions for the same raster image format. TIFF is used for scanning, printing, publishing, mapping, and image storage because it supports different color models, high bit depths, metadata, multipage files, and lossless LZW or ZIP compression.

Converting EMZ to TIF rasterizes the EMF drawing into pixels. TIFF files are therefore usually larger than the source EMZ, but they work in applications that require bitmap input and provide predictable output resolution for print or archival workflows.

Convert with desktop software

1. Make a copy of the original file.
2. Rename the copy, for example, from drawing.emz to drawing.gz. The extension change helps archive utilities identify the gzip stream; it does not alter the file data.
3. Open the renamed file with 7-Zip or another gzip-capable utility and extract the payload. It is normally an EMF file. Rename it to drawing.emf if the utility does not preserve the extension.
4. Open drawing.emf in a program with EMF import and TIFF export support, such as LibreOffice Draw. If the file is hidden in the file picker, select an all-files filter.
5. Use File → Export, select TIFF/TIF, choose the required bitmap resolution and compression settings, and save the result.

On systems with Python, the gzip payload can be extracted with:

The extracted EMF still requires an application that can render EMF and export TIFF. Desktop applications may expose different resolution, color, and compression controls.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Rasterization is permanent. Use about 300 dpi as a common starting point for printed material; select the pixel dimensions or resolution required by the destination rather than relying on the default.
• Higher output resolution does not restore detail from a low-resolution bitmap embedded inside the EMF.
• Choose LZW or ZIP TIFF compression when available. Both are lossless; JPEG-compressed TIFF can introduce artifacts around text and line art.
• Missing fonts can change text layout or substitution. Windows-specific EMF features, transparency, clipping, pattern fills, embedded objects, and unsupported effects may also render differently.
• Inspect the exported TIF at high magnification and compare it with the original before using it for publication, printing, or archival storage.
