Notes on quality and compatibility

DDS to TIFF is usually a one-way quality-preserving conversion for the visible image, but there are important limitations. DDS-specific features such as GPU compression, mipmaps, and some texture metadata are typically not preserved in TIFF. The result is usually a standard 2D image, not a game texture container.

If the DDS uses lossy texture compression, the converted TIFF will keep the image as decoded from that compressed source, so it cannot restore detail that was never stored in the DDS. Transparency is usually preserved if the source DDS includes an alpha channel and the chosen TIFF settings support it. For best compatibility, use uncompressed TIFF or LZW-compressed TIFF when sharing with other applications.

Some DDS files may not open correctly in general-purpose editors if they use uncommon compression formats or are damaged. In those cases, a specialized texture tool may be needed before exporting to TIFF.
