Free online CR2 to TIF converter

Canon camera photographs often need conversion when an editor, print workflow, archive system, or imaging device does not support CR2. TIFF is more widely accepted for editing, printing, and storage, but the output is usually much larger than a JPEG.

What the CR2 format is

CR2 (Canon Raw Version 2) is Canon's RAW image format, used by many Canon digital cameras. It stores minimally processed sensor data with metadata such as exposure, white balance, lens, and color information. CR2 files commonly appear after copying photographs directly from a camera or memory card.

CR2 is not a finished RGB image. A RAW processor must demosaic the sensor data and apply choices such as white balance, exposure, color profile, sharpening, and noise reduction. Adobe Lightroom Classic, Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop, Canon Digital Photo Professional, darktable, and RawTherapee can process CR2 files, while some basic image viewers cannot.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a tagged raster image format used for editing, prepress, scanning, scientific imaging, and archiving. TIFF can store 8-bit or 16-bit color channels, embedded color profiles, metadata, and lossless LZW or ZIP compression.

TIFF avoids the generation loss associated with JPEG when saved with lossless compression, but TIFF is not inherently lossless: it can also contain lossy JPEG compression. A converted TIFF contains rendered pixels, not the original RAW sensor data, so the selected white balance, exposure, demosaicing, color profile, and noise reduction are baked into the result.

How to convert CR2 to TIF

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the CR2-to-TIF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .cr2 file or files.
3. Choose TIF or TIFF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .tif file and open it in the intended application to check its color and compatibility.

This option requires no installed software and is suitable for a small number of non-sensitive photographs. Upload limits, processing options, and privacy policies can make desktop software preferable for private images or large batches.

Using Adobe Lightroom Classic

1. Import the CR2 files into Lightroom Classic.
2. Adjust exposure, white balance, color, sharpening, and noise reduction as required.
3. Select the photographs and choose File → Export.
4. Under File Settings, set Image Format to TIFF.
5. Choose 16-bit for substantial further editing or print production; choose 8-bit for smaller files and routine output.
6. Choose LZW or ZIP compression, select the output folder, and click Export.

Using Camera Raw and Photoshop

1. Open the CR2 in Adobe Camera Raw and apply the required RAW adjustments.
2. Click Open Image, or hold Shift and click Open Object to retain the RAW settings inside a Photoshop Smart Object.
3. Choose File → Save As or File → Save a Copy, select TIFF, and set the required bit depth, color profile, and compression.

Using free desktop software

In darktable, import the CR2, adjust it in the darkroom, then use Export with TIFF selected. In RawTherapee, open and process the file, add it to the processing queue, select TIFF and the destination settings, then start processing. Both applications decode the RAW data directly and do not require an intermediate JPEG.

Quality and compatibility settings

Use 16-bit TIFF when preserving editing latitude matters. It provides more tonal levels than 8-bit output but can be several times larger than the source CR2. LZW and ZIP compression reduce file size without changing pixel values; JPEG compression inside a TIFF is lossy and is generally unsuitable for an editing master.

Select the output color profile deliberately. sRGB is the safest choice for general viewing and applications that ignore embedded profiles. Adobe RGB suits many print workflows, while ProPhoto RGB retains a larger rendered color range but requires color-managed software and an appropriate workflow.

TIFF support varies by application. If a program rejects a 16-bit or compressed file, export an 8-bit RGB TIFF with LZW compression. Keep the original CR2 files: a TIFF cannot restore the full RAW editing flexibility, and changes such as exposure and white balance have already been rendered into its pixels.
