How to convert djvu to tif file

Scanned books and archival documents in DJVU format may need conversion when a scanner, OCR program, publishing workflow, or image editor accepts TIFF but not DJVU. TIFF also provides individual page images for editing, printing, import, or archival storage.

What the DJVU format is

DJVU is a document format developed for scanned books, newspapers, manuals, and other image-heavy pages. It separates foreground text, background images, and bitonal content so scans remain readable at a smaller size than many general-purpose document formats.

DJVU files are found in digital libraries, academic archives, technical manuals, and older scanning or publishing systems. A file can contain multiple pages and a hidden OCR text layer, but its visible page content is primarily a rasterized scan.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a tagged raster-image format used by scanners, publishers, archives, GIS applications, OCR software, and image editors. It supports black-and-white, grayscale, and color images, plus lossless compression such as LZW, ZIP, and Group 4 for suitable bitonal pages.

TIFF is useful when software requires an image instead of a document container or when pages must be edited individually. It can store several pages in one file, although some applications support only single-page TIFF files.

How to convert DJVU to TIF

Using DjVuLibre

DjVuLibre provides the ddjvu command, which renders DJVU pages directly as TIFF without an intermediate PDF. On Debian or Ubuntu, install the command-line tools with sudo apt install djvulibre-bin; equivalent packages are available for other operating systems.

  1. Open a terminal in the folder containing the source file.
  2. Convert one page with ddjvu -format=tiff -page=1 input.djvu page-001.tif. Replace 1 with the required page number.
  3. Convert all pages with ddjvu -format=tiff book.djvu book.tif. When the source has multiple pages, the output is a multi-page TIFF if supported by the installed DjVuLibre build.
  4. Open the result in the target application and verify the page count, orientation, colors, and text before deleting the DJVU source.

To render at a larger size, use a moderate scale such as -scale=2, for example ddjvu -format=tiff -scale=2 input.djvu output.tif. Scaling enlarges the rendered image but cannot restore detail that was absent from the original scan; it also increases the TIFF size.

Using a desktop application

On Windows, IrfanView with its format plugins can open many DJVU files and export them as TIFF. Open the file through File → Open, choose File → Save As, select TIFF or TIF, choose the available compression and color settings, and save the result. Check whether the application exports only the displayed page; use its batch or page-range function when available.

Converting without installing software

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com: upload the DJVU file, select TIF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Use a local tool instead for confidential or legally restricted documents.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion rasterizes each DJVU page into a TIFF image. It does not preserve the DJVU compression structure, searchable OCR layer, bookmarks, annotations, or document navigation. Retain the original DJVU or run OCR on the resulting TIFF files if searchable text is required.

TIFF files can be substantially larger than DJVU files, particularly at high resolution or in full color. Use grayscale for grayscale scans and bitonal TIFF only for clean black-and-white pages; thresholding an illustrated or shaded page can remove detail. Confirm that the receiving program supports multi-page TIFF and the selected compression, because some software accepts only single-page, uncompressed, or specific color-profile variants.
