Convert AI to PSD

A Photoshop workflow, template, or client handoff may require an Illustrator artwork file in .psd format. Conversion creates a pixel-based document for editing, compositing, or delivery to software that does not support Illustrator’s native format.

What the AI format is

.ai is Adobe Illustrator’s native graphics format. It stores resolution-independent vector paths, type, fills, strokes, artboards, transparency, gradients, effects, and linked or embedded raster images. Illustrator files are common for logos, icons, packaging, illustrations, print layouts, and brand assets.

Many AI files contain PDF-compatible data, allowing other applications to preview or import them. That compatibility does not preserve every Illustrator feature, and an AI file without compatible PDF data may open only in Illustrator.

What the PSD format is

.psd is Adobe Photoshop’s native document format. It supports pixel layers, masks, adjustment layers, blending modes, channels, paths, text layers, and some editable effects.

PSD suits photo compositing, retouching, texture work, web graphics, and Photoshop-based production. It can contain separate exported layers, but an AI-to-PSD conversion normally rasterizes vector artwork. The PSD does not retain Illustrator’s complete path-editing, artboard, appearance, or live-effect model.

How to convert AI to PSD

Adobe Illustrator gives the most reliable result because it reads the original AI document directly.

1. Open the AI file in Illustrator and verify artboards, linked images, fonts, clipping masks, transparency, and effects.
2. Choose File → Export → Export As, select Photoshop (PSD), and enable Use Artboards if the exported bounds must match an artboard.
3. Set the raster resolution. Use the project’s required value; 72–150 ppi is common for screen assets and 300 ppi is common for print-oriented output.
4. Choose RGB for most screen work or CMYK for a print workflow, and enable Embed ICC Profile when the receiving application depends on embedded color management.
5. In the Photoshop export options, choose Flat Image for maximum compatibility or Write Layers to export Illustrator top-level layers as Photoshop layers. Enable text preservation or maximum editability only when the dialog offers those options and the recipient needs them; complex objects can still be rasterized.
6. Set anti-aliasing and transparency options, click Export, then open the PSD in Photoshop to inspect edges, text, transparency, layers, and color.

Photoshop can rasterize a PDF-compatible AI file directly: choose File → Open, select the AI file, set the import resolution and color mode, and confirm. This produces a pixel-based document and is suitable for a quick flattened result, but Illustrator provides better control over artboards, layers, linked assets, and export settings.

If the artwork only needs to appear inside a Photoshop document, use File → Place Embedded or File → Place Linked in Photoshop. This inserts the AI artwork as a smart object rather than converting it into independently editable Photoshop layers; the vector content remains editable through Illustrator.

For desktop alternatives, Affinity Designer can open many PDF-compatible AI files and export the result as PSD, but unsupported Illustrator features may change during import. For occasional conversions, Photopea can import many PDF-compatible AI files and use File → Export as → PSD. CloudConvert and Zamzar also provide browser-based AI-to-PSD conversion. Upload only files permitted by your organization, and expect limited layer preservation from online services.

Quality and compatibility limits

The export resolution sets the maximum useful detail in the PSD. Enlarging a low-resolution PSD cannot restore vector sharpness. Inspect small text, thin strokes, gradients, drop shadows, transparency, and clipping masks at the final output size because rasterization can alter edges and blending.

Illustrator layers exported to PSD are not equivalent to editable Illustrator objects. Text can become pixels, live effects and blend behavior can be rendered differently, and linked images must remain available during export. Multiple artboards may produce separate output documents or an export whose bounds depend on the selected artboard settings.

Keep the original .ai file, fonts, and linked assets when future vector editing is required. If the recipient needs true vector editability rather than Photoshop compositing, provide the AI or a suitable PDF/SVG file instead of relying on PSD.
