How to convert ppt to odp file

Older PowerPoint files may need conversion before LibreOffice Impress or another OpenDocument application can edit them reliably. An ODP copy also gives teams using non-Microsoft software an editable file for sharing or archiving.

What the PPT format is

.ppt is Microsoft PowerPoint’s proprietary binary presentation format, used mainly by PowerPoint 97–2003 and earlier releases. It can contain slides, text, charts, images, audio, video, transitions, animations, speaker notes, embedded objects, and macros. Older email attachments, business archives, school collections, and legacy PowerPoint installations commonly contain PPT files; newer PowerPoint versions normally use .pptx.

What the ODP format is

.odp is OpenDocument Presentation, an open XML-based format supported by LibreOffice Impress, Apache OpenOffice Impress, and other compatible applications. An ODP file is a ZIP-based package containing the presentation’s structured content and resources, rather than the binary structure used by PPT.

ODP is useful when the recipient uses LibreOffice or OpenOffice, when an editable presentation must remain independent of Microsoft software, or when an organization uses an open document standard. It does not guarantee identical behavior in PowerPoint: applications implement fonts, layouts, animations, charts, macros, and embedded objects differently.

How to convert PPT to ODP with LibreOffice

  1. Open LibreOffice Impress.
  2. Select File → Open and choose the .ppt file.
  3. Wait for the import to finish and inspect the slides for changed fonts, positions, or media.
  4. Select File → Save As.
  5. Choose ODF Presentation (.odp) as the file type, specify the filename and destination, and select Save.
  6. If a format warning appears, choose Use ODF Format.

LibreOffice can also convert files from a command line, which is useful for repeated conversions:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to odp --outdir converted presentation.ppt

The command writes the result to the converted directory. Quote filenames and directories containing spaces, for example:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to odp --outdir "Converted files" "Annual presentation.ppt"

Other conversion options

Apache OpenOffice Impress can open a PPT file and save it through File → Save As using ODF Presentation (.odp). Microsoft PowerPoint versions that support OpenDocument can also use File → Save As and select OpenDocument Presentation (.odp), although LibreOffice is often the more practical choice when the destination application is LibreOffice.

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the PPT file, select ODP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload confidential or regulated presentations unless the service’s data-handling terms satisfy your requirements.

Quality and compatibility checks

Conversion may change slide dimensions, text wrapping, line spacing, tables, charts, SmartArt-like diagrams, hyperlinks, transitions, animation timing, audio, video, presenter notes, or embedded objects. Missing fonts can alter line breaks and move objects; install the source fonts or replace them before saving the ODP file.

PowerPoint VBA macros generally do not transfer as equivalent LibreOffice Basic macros. Proprietary or embedded objects may become static images, lose editability, or fail to function. Review every slide in the application that will display or edit the ODP file, test media and links, and keep the original PPT when exact PowerPoint behavior, macros, or animation timing is required. Export the checked presentation to PDF when a fixed visual record is needed.
