Convert CAL to PDF

A CALS raster drawing may need conversion when the recipient’s viewer, printer, archive, or document system accepts PDF but not CAL. PDF also makes a scanned technical page easier to share and combine with other documents.

What the CAL format is

In the Graphics category, .cal usually identifies a CALS raster image, especially CALS Raster Type 1. CALS was designed for exchanging scanned documents, maps, engineering drawings, technical illustrations, and military documentation. Type 1 files are typically bilevel, Group 4-compressed raster images rather than editable vector drawings.

CAD and technical-publication systems, document-imaging software, scanners, and older engineering workflows create or export CALS files. A .cal extension can also identify unrelated formats in other applications, so verify the file type before converting it:

magick identify drawing.cal

The result should identify CALS or CAL. If ImageMagick reports an unknown format or a different raster type, use the application that created the file instead of treating it as a CALS image.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-oriented document format that preserves page dimensions, orientation, layout, and print appearance across operating systems. Browsers, office systems, archive platforms, printers, and electronic-signature software commonly support it.

A CALS image converted to PDF remains a raster image embedded in a PDF page. The conversion does not create editable CAD geometry, vector lines, or selectable text. Run OCR separately if the scanned page needs searchable or copyable text.

How to convert a CAL file to PDF

ImageMagick on Windows, macOS, or Linux

ImageMagick is a practical desktop option when its installation includes the CALS coder. Install it from the official ImageMagick distribution, verify the input, and run:

magick -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 drawing.cal drawing.pdf

The 300 value supplies the intended input resolution when the CALS file lacks reliable DPI metadata. It also determines the PDF page dimensions from the image’s pixel dimensions. Use the source system’s documented resolution when available; using 600 can preserve the intended print scale for fine linework, but it cannot add detail absent from the raster.

For a genuinely black-and-white source, Group 4 compression can reduce the PDF size:

magick -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 drawing.cal -compress Group4 drawing.pdf

Use Group 4 only for bilevel images. Do not apply it to grayscale or color data, because it is a one-bit compression method and may discard or alter that information.

Create a temporary raster preview if the PDF output needs checking:

magick -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 drawing.cal preview.png

Compare the preview with the source, especially thin lines, page borders, rotation, and blank margins. Some ImageMagick installations block PDF writing through their security policy; if that happens, export an intermediate TIFF and create the PDF with a TIFF-capable PDF tool such as img2pdf:

magick -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 drawing.cal drawing.tif
img2pdf drawing.tif -o drawing.pdf

The originating graphics or engineering application

If the CALS file came from a CAD, scanning, or document-imaging system, its native application is often the safest converter. Open the file and choose File → Export or File → Print, select PDF, and specify the original page size and print scale. Native software is preferable when ImageMagick cannot decode the file or when the source contains proprietary headers, tiling, or nonstandard metadata.

Online conversion

Services such as Convertio and Zamzar may accept CAL or CALS and output PDF. Confirm that the service’s current format list explicitly names CAL or CALS, upload the file, choose PDF, convert it, and inspect the downloaded result. Support for the ambiguous .cal extension can change, and a service may reject or misidentify a file.

Online conversion uploads the source to a third party. Use a local converter for confidential drawings, scanned records, personal information, or export-controlled engineering data.

Quality and compatibility caveats

CALS files often have missing, incorrect, or nonstandard resolution metadata. The selected density changes the PDF’s physical page size and print scale, not the number of pixels or the underlying detail. For a required drawing scale, calculate the density from the source pixel dimensions and intended page dimensions, then verify the PDF with a measured reference or test print.

If identify fails, the output is blank, or lines are missing, try the originating application. Some legacy CALS files use headers, compression, tiling, or container conventions that general-purpose converters do not fully support. Check the PDF at 100% and at the intended print size before distributing it.
