Archived PageMaker layouts must be converted when a printer, editor, or production team requires an editable Adobe InDesign document. Current InDesign releases do not open PageMaker .pmd files directly, so conversion requires legacy software or a reconstruction workflow.
What PageMaker PMD files contain
PMD is the native publication format of Adobe PageMaker, Adobe’s discontinued desktop-publishing application. PageMaker 6.x and 7.0 publications can contain page geometry, text frames, styles, master pages, colors, placed graphics, and printer settings.
This guidance applies to Adobe PageMaker PMD files. The .pmd extension is also used by unrelated applications, so confirm that the file opens in PageMaker or originated from a PageMaker archive before using these steps.
Why use INDD
INDD is the native editable format of Adobe InDesign. It preserves InDesign page items, text, styles, links, layers, swatches, and production settings, and it can be packaged with linked assets for print handoff or archiving.
A current InDesign release can open and upgrade an INDD file saved by InDesign CS6. For broader interchange with older InDesign installations, export an .idml copy after validating the converted document.
Convert with legacy InDesign
The only practical native route is InDesign CS6 or another older InDesign version that includes the PageMaker import filter. InDesign CS2 through CS6 can open PageMaker 6.0 through 7.x publications and templates; InDesign CS supports PageMaker 6.5x through 7.x. Creative Cloud versions do not include this capability.
- Copy the
.pmdfile and its original asset folders to a working drive. Preserve linked images, logos, fonts, and any supplied color or profile files. - Use a licensed installation of InDesign CS6 on a compatible legacy computer or supported legacy operating-system environment. Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions no longer provide a dependable method for downloading or activating CS6.
- Install the original fonts before opening the file. Missing or substituted fonts change character widths, line endings, page breaks, and text overflow.
- In InDesign CS6, choose File → Open, select the PageMaker
.pmdfile, and allow InDesign to convert it. - Inspect every page for missing links, substituted fonts, overset text, altered tables, incorrect page size, changed master-page items, spot colors, and text reflow.
- Choose File → Save As and save an
.inddcopy. Open that copy in the required current InDesign version, then use File → Package to collect the INDD file, linked graphics, permitted fonts, and a package report.
Keep the original PMD unchanged and retain a reference PDF or printed proof for visual comparison.
Handling PageMaker 5.0 and 6.0 files
If only InDesign CS is available, PageMaker 5.0 or 6.0 files must first be upgraded to PageMaker 6.5 format. Adobe’s legacy Cross-Platform PageMaker Converter was designed for this purpose, but it is obsolete and is not reliably available from Adobe; use only a verified copy from an authorized software archive or the original media.
With InDesign CS2 through CS6, PageMaker 6.0 files can normally be opened directly. Opening and resaving a very old file in PageMaker 6.5 or 7.0 first can still help if the import fails or the document has damaged legacy data.
Fallback when PageMaker import is unavailable
Open the publication in PageMaker 7.0, if available, and produce a high-resolution PDF through its Adobe PDF or PostScript/PDF output workflow. The PDF preserves appearance but not the original editable PageMaker structure.
Markzware PDF2DTP can convert a PDF into an InDesign document for repair and re-editing. It is a reconstruction method: text frames, reading order, tables, styles, and image links may require substantial manual work. A PDF placed directly into InDesign is suitable for output or reference, but it is not an editable conversion.
No reputable browser-based service provides dependable, structurally editable PageMaker PMD-to-INDD conversion. Online PDF converters can create or process a fallback PDF, but they cannot reproduce a PageMaker document as a reliable INDD layout. Do not upload confidential publications, customer data, or unpublished material to unverified conversion sites.
Compatibility checks
Native import can alter unsupported PageMaker features, OLE objects, plug-in content, legacy color definitions, complex tables, and damaged image links. Compare the converted INDD against the PageMaker source or reference PDF at final output size, run Window → Output → Preflight, and create a proof PDF before printing.

Frequently asked questions
Will my PageMaker text and layout stay editable when converting PMD to INDD?
Generally, the text, page layout, and placed objects become editable InDesign content. Some PageMaker-specific features may be altered or omitted if InDesign does not support them.
Are fonts and images preserved in a PMD to INDD conversion?
The document can retain references to its fonts and linked graphics, but missing fonts may be substituted and linked images may need to be located again. Keep the original image files and install the required fonts to reduce layout changes.
Why does my PMD to INDD conversion have changed spacing or page breaks?
Font substitution, different text composition, and unsupported PageMaker settings can change line wrapping and pagination. Check paragraph breaks, columns, master pages, and text overset after conversion.
Can I convert an INDD file back to the original PMD format?
Usually not with full fidelity, because InDesign features and document structure may not have a matching PageMaker equivalent. Keep the original PMD file if you may need to edit it in its original format.
