A Melco-compatible embroidery machine or production system may require .EXP when the design is available only as a BERNINA .ART file. Converting it makes the design transferable, but changes an editable design into machine stitch data.
What the ART format is
.ART is the native design format associated with BERNINA Artista machines and BERNINA embroidery software. An ART file can retain editable objects, lettering, appliqué elements, stitch settings, thread assignments, sequencing, and other design information that is usually lost when exporting to a machine format.
ART files exist in multiple software revisions. A converter may open one ART revision but reject another, so compatibility must be checked against the file's version and the installed software. Most embroidery machines cannot read ART directly.
What the EXP format is
.EXP is a stitch format used primarily by Melco embroidery systems and supported by some other machines and embroidery applications. It stores needle movements, stitches, jumps, and related machine commands for sewing a completed design; it is not a full object-based editing format.
EXP generally does not retain the ART file's editable objects, lettering properties, fill settings, or complete thread information. Color-change commands may be present, but the file commonly lacks usable thread names or color values, and some workflows require separate color information. Assign thread colors manually in the target machine software before sewing.
How to convert an ART file to EXP
- Install a BERNINA ARTlink release or BERNINA Embroidery Software version that explicitly supports the ART revision and EXP export. ARTlink is suitable for format conversion; the full BERNINA software is preferable when the design needs editing, resequencing, resizing, or stitch recalculation.
- Open the file with File → Open and select the
.ARTdesign. If the software reports an unsupported version, use a newer compatible BERNINA release or have the file resaved by its creator in a supported ART version. - Check the preview and design properties, including hoop size, orientation, stitch count, color sequence, trims, jumps, lettering, and start and end points. Correct the design before exporting.
- After substantial resizing, rotation, or editing, use the software's recalculation or stitch-processing command. Do not export stale stitch data after changing object geometry.
- Choose File → Save As or File → Export, select
EXP, and save to a new filename such asdesign.exp. Changingdesign.arttodesign.expin a file manager does not convert the data. - Open the EXP file in the target machine software, assign thread colors, confirm hoop and orientation, inspect color stops and trims, and transfer it using the machine's normal USB, card, network, or production workflow.
OESD ARTsizer and Convert It, Mac are established alternatives for straightforward format conversion. Wilcom EmbroideryStudio and Hatch Embroidery can also be used when the installed version explicitly supports the particular ART revision and EXP export. In each case, verify the imported design before exporting; an extension list alone does not guarantee correct ART support.
General online converters are a poor choice for ART because support varies by proprietary ART revision and uploaded designs may be commercially sensitive. Use an online service only when it specifically lists BERNINA ART input and embroidery EXP output, explains file retention and privacy, and provides a stitch preview or allows verification after download. Do not upload confidential or licensed designs to an unverified service.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Keep the original ART file as the master copy. EXP export is normally lossy: once object structure and design parameters have been discarded, they cannot be reliably recovered from the EXP file.
Verify the final hoop and sewing size before export. Excessive scaling or density changes can produce gaps, thread buildup, distorted satin columns, needle breaks, or fabric puckering; substantial changes require stitch recalculation rather than simple resizing of existing stitches.
Inspect jump stitches, trims, tie-ins, tie-offs, color stops, and start and end points because machines and software interpret these commands differently. A test sew with the intended fabric, stabilizer, needle, and thread is the final compatibility check.
