A TIF file normally contains a scanned page of printed sheet music, while MSCX is MuseScore’s editable score format. Conversion is needed when a scanned score must be reconstructed as notation that can be edited, played back, transposed, or printed in MuseScore.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a lossless raster-image format commonly produced by scanners and archival publishing workflows. In music composition, it usually stores a page or set of pages of printed notation as pixels rather than notes, measures, and symbols. MuseScore, notation publishers, scanners, and music-library systems may export or contain TIF page images. A TIF does not preserve editable staff structure, MIDI data, lyrics, chord symbols, or playback instructions as separate objects.

What the MSCX format is

MSCX is MuseScore’s uncompressed, XML-based native score format. It stores editable notation objects such as staves, notes, rests, clefs, key signatures, dynamics, lyrics, text, layout data, and playback-related properties. MuseScore creates and opens MSCX files; the compressed counterpart is MSCZ. MSCX is useful when the score must remain directly inspectable or editable as XML, although MSCZ is usually more convenient for routine sharing.

How to actually convert TIF to MSCX

This is an optical music recognition conversion, not a file-container change. The practical workflow is Audiveris for recognition followed by MuseScore for correction and MSCX export.

  1. Prepare a clear scan at about 300–400 dpi. Crop page borders, straighten tilted pages, and use monochrome or grayscale when it improves staff contrast.
  2. Open the TIF in Audiveris, or convert it first if the build does not accept TIFF reliably. ImageMagick can create a PNG with magick input.tif -density 300 -colorspace Gray output.png.
  3. In Audiveris, open the image, run page processing and optical music recognition, then inspect detected staves, measures, noteheads, accidentals, ties, slurs, lyrics, and text. Correct recognition errors before export.
  4. Export the recognized score as MusicXML, normally through File → Export → MusicXML. The result may be .musicxml or compressed .mxl.
  5. Open the exported MusicXML file in MuseScore with File → Open. Check page layout, instruments, voices, beaming, tuplets, dynamics, lyrics, and playback.
  6. Save the corrected score with File → Save As, choose the MuseScore uncompressed format, and use a filename ending in .mscx.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software, but inspect the resulting score in MuseScore because image-to-notation recognition can require manual correction.

Quality and compatibility limitations

MSCX cannot preserve visual information that recognition fails to interpret. Low-resolution scans, skew, stains, damaged pages, handwritten notation, dense polyphony, ossias, unusual symbols, historical fonts, and overlapping markings commonly produce incorrect notes or missing objects. A multi-page TIF may become separate recognized pages or require page-by-page processing.

Review the converted file against the original image before publication or performance. MusicXML import and MSCX output can vary between MuseScore versions, so reopen the saved .mscx in the target MuseScore version and verify fonts, page breaks, playback instruments, and any imported graphics.
