A TIF file used in music composition is usually a scanned page of sheet music, while MSCZ is an editable MuseScore project. The conversion is needed when scanned notation must be corrected, transposed, played back, or saved as a structured score instead of a static image.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also called TIFF, is a raster image format commonly produced by scanners and image editors such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and Affinity Photo. In music work, it normally contains a scanned score, manuscript page, or printed part. The file stores pixels rather than notes, rests, measures, instrument assignments, or playback data, so it cannot become an editable score through a simple format change.

What the MSCZ format is

MSCZ is MuseScore’s compressed project format. It stores structured notation, including pitches, rhythms, voices, articulations, lyrics, layout, instruments, and playback settings. MuseScore can edit, transpose, print, and play an MSCZ score, but an MSCZ file does not preserve the original TIF as editable notation unless the image is separately attached or imported as a background.

How to actually convert TIF to MSCZ

Use optical music recognition (OMR) to interpret the scan, export the result as MusicXML, then open that MusicXML file in MuseScore and save it as MSCZ. Audiveris is a suitable desktop OMR application for this workflow.

  1. Prepare the scan. Crop empty margins, straighten each page, and use a clear monochrome or grayscale image at roughly 300–400 dpi. Save it as score.tif. Remove handwritten marks and folds where possible.
  2. Open score.tif in Audiveris. In the graphical interface, run the page recognition or OMR process, inspect detected systems and measures, and correct recognition errors before exporting.
  3. Export the recognized notation from Audiveris as MusicXML using File → Export. A command-line batch workflow can use audiveris -batch -export -output output score.tif, although exact options vary by Audiveris version.
  4. Open the resulting .musicxml or compressed .mxl file in MuseScore with File → Open.
  5. Review the imported score, repair notes, rhythms, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, beaming, lyrics, and page layout, then choose File → Save As and select the MSCZ format, for example score.mscz.

You can also try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. For scanned notation, the result still depends on whether the conversion process includes optical music recognition; a normal image conversion cannot infer musical structure.

Quality and compatibility limitations

OMR is not a lossless conversion. It may misread low-resolution scans, handwritten notation, damaged staff lines, dense orchestral pages, grace notes, tuplets, lyrics, guitar tablature, and overlapping annotations. Always compare the generated score with the source image, especially pitches, accidentals, rhythms, voices, and measure totals.

A multipage TIF may be recognized as separate pages depending on the OMR application. Export each page or the complete document as one MusicXML score when possible. MuseScore can open MusicXML from Audiveris, but imported spacing and layout often require manual adjustment. If the goal is only to display or archive the scan, retain the original TIF or place it in a PDF; MSCZ is appropriate when the notation must be editable.
