Free online WMA to MSCZ converter

A WMA file contains compressed audio, while an MSCZ file contains editable musical notation for MuseScore. The conversion is therefore not a normal format change: the recording must be transcribed into notes, usually through MIDI or MusicXML, before it can be saved as an MSCZ score.

What the WMA format is

WMA, or Windows Media Audio, is an audio format developed by Microsoft for music, voice recordings, streaming, and downloaded media. Windows Media Player and older Windows recording or media applications commonly create WMA files; some portable recorders and legacy music libraries also use it.

A WMA file stores sound waves, not note names, durations, measures, clefs, lyrics, or instrument assignments. Its codec and bitrate affect transcription accuracy, but they do not provide the notation data required by MuseScore.

What the MSCZ format is

MSCZ is MuseScore's compressed, native score format. It stores structured notation such as pitches, rhythms, voices, staff properties, articulations, dynamics, lyrics, layout, and playback information.

MSCZ files are appropriate when the result must remain editable in MuseScore Studio. They are usually smaller than uncompressed project files and preserve more score structure than an audio file or rendered PDF. MuseScore can import MIDI and MusicXML, then save the resulting score with File → Save As and the .mscz extension.

How to actually convert WMA to MSCZ

1. Check whether notation already exists. If the WMA came with a MIDI, MusicXML, or existing MuseScore file, use that source instead. It will produce a substantially more accurate score than analyzing audio.
2. Convert WMA to an analysis-friendly audio file. FFmpeg can decode WMA to WAV without adding another lossy compression step:
   ffmpeg -i input.wma -ar 44100 -ac 1 output.wav
   Keep stereo by omitting -ac 1 if separate instruments are distributed across channels.
3. Transcribe the recording. Use an audio-to-MIDI or audio-to-notation application such as AnthemScore, or transcribe manually in MuseScore while listening to the WAV. Audio transcription software normally works best with one clearly isolated melodic instrument; full mixes, chords, drums, vocals, and changing instrumentation require substantial correction.
4. Export an intermediate notation file. Export the transcription as MIDI for approximate pitches and timing, or MusicXML when the software supports notation-aware export. MusicXML generally preserves measures, durations, clefs, and multiple staves better than MIDI.
5. Open and correct it in MuseScore Studio. Use File → Open for the MIDI or MusicXML file. Check tempo, time signature, pickup measures, quantization, tuplets, ties, rests, voices, key signature, and instrument assignments. Delete false notes and split or combine measures as needed.
6. Save the score as MSCZ. Choose File → Save As, select MuseScore's compressed score format, and save a filename such as transcription.mscz.

You can submit the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software, but a conventional file converter cannot infer reliable notation from WMA audio. An online result is useful only if the service specifically performs audio-to-score transcription; otherwise it may reject the input or produce an invalid or empty MSCZ file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

There is no lossless automatic path from arbitrary audio to a finished score. The recording may contain expressive timing, tuning deviations, reverb, background noise, overlapping instruments, or notes that are difficult to distinguish algorithmically. A low-bitrate WMA can further reduce pitch and onset accuracy.

MIDI import often creates excessive short notes and incorrect rests because recorded timing must be quantized. MusicXML is preferable when available, but it still requires inspection in MuseScore. Preserve the original WMA and intermediate MIDI or MusicXML files because the MSCZ file contains the edited notation, not the original audio and not necessarily a reliable record of the transcription process.
