What the DWFX format is

DWFX is Autodesk Design Web Format XPS, a packaged publishing format based on Microsoft’s Open XML Paper Specification (XPS). Autodesk products publish it for distributing drawing sheets, markups, design data, and, in some cases, 3D content without sending the original editable CAD files.

AutoCAD and other Autodesk design applications can publish DWFX files. Autodesk Design Review can open and display them; project teams commonly use DWFX when recipients need to review issued drawings without CAD authoring software. A DWFX is not a DWG and does not provide the same editing capability as the source model.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format supported by Windows, macOS, Linux, web browsers, mobile devices, printers, and document-management systems. It preserves page size, orientation, text placement, and linework independently of the recipient’s CAD software.

PDF is appropriate when recipients need to view, print, annotate, or archive published sheets. It does not retain the full editable CAD model, DWFX-specific navigation, or every interactive and 3D feature that may be present in the source.

How to convert DWFX to PDF

Autodesk Design Review and a PDF printer

Autodesk Design Review is a Windows desktop viewer that can render DWFX for printing. It is an older Autodesk product, so availability and compatibility depend on the Windows version; obtain it only from an Autodesk source or use another application that can open the file.

1. Open the .dwfx file in Autodesk Design Review using File → Open.
2. Check the sheet list or page thumbnails. A DWFX may contain multiple sheets; select the required sheets or configure the print range for all sheets.
3. Choose File → Print.
4. Select Microsoft Print to PDF, Adobe PDF, or another locally installed PDF printer.
5. Set the paper size, orientation, scale, and page range. Use Fit to paper only when the drawing does not need a verified engineering scale.
6. Print to a filename such as project-sheets.pdf, then open the PDF and check every page.

A local PDF printer generally creates a visual PDF from the viewer’s rendered output. If the original DWG or another native source is available, generate the PDF directly from AutoCAD with Output → Plot or Output → Publish instead; this avoids an extra rendering step and gives better control over plot styles, lineweights, page setups, and sheet batches.

Online conversion services

Browser-based services such as Zamzar and Convertio may accept DWFX and produce PDF. Open the service’s current DWFX conversion page, upload the file, select PDF, start the conversion, and download the result. Format support can change, so confirm that the service explicitly lists DWFX before uploading.

Online conversion is unsuitable for confidential designs, personal data, export-controlled information, or restricted project files unless the service has been approved for that data. Use Design Review with a local PDF printer for sensitive drawings, and delete uploaded files according to the service’s retention controls.

Windows XPS fallback

Because DWFX is based on XPS packaging, some Windows systems can open a copy after its extension is changed from .dwfx to .xps or .oxps. This is not a universal conversion method: Windows XPS Viewer support varies by Windows release, and a DWFX may contain Autodesk-specific content that an XPS viewer cannot render correctly.

Work on a copy, open it in an installed XPS viewer, choose Print, select a PDF printer, and verify the output. Do not rename the original as a substitute for conversion.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Printing produces a visual PDF, not an editable DWG. Layers, model intelligence, DWFX navigation, and some 3D behavior may be lost.
• Printing only the active sheet creates an incomplete result. Compare the PDF page count with the DWFX sheet list.
• Incorrect paper size, orientation, margins, or scaling can clip the drawing or change its measured scale. Verify a known dimension after conversion.
• Inspect thin lines, lineweights, fonts, colors, transparency, hatches, markups, and embedded images. Missing fonts and unsupported DWFX features can alter the rendered appearance.
• For construction or engineering documents, retain the original DWFX and native CAD files as the authoritative records; treat the PDF as the issued viewing or printing copy.
