Convert IDW to PDF

Manufacturers, suppliers, and reviewers often need a drawing that can be opened or printed without Autodesk Inventor, while document systems commonly require a fixed-layout PDF. Exporting an IDW drawing to PDF provides a shareable issue copy but does not replace the editable CAD file.

What the IDW format is

IDW is Autodesk Inventor’s native 2D drawing format. It stores one or more drawing sheets with views, dimensions, annotations, parts lists, title blocks, and references to Inventor model files such as .ipt parts and .iam assemblies.

Mechanical designers, manufacturers, suppliers, and engineering archives use IDW files. An IDW is not a general-purpose image or document file, and its referenced models may be required to resolve links, update views, or display current model data correctly. Keep the original IDW and its associated CAD files when future editing is required.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format supported by web browsers, operating systems, print services, document-management systems, and common review software. A properly exported PDF preserves sheet size, page order, linework, text placement, dimensions, and title-block content without requiring recipients to install Inventor.

PDF suits drawing review, approval, email distribution, printing, and reference archives. It generally does not preserve Inventor’s parametric structure, editable drawing views, model links, or full CAD design intent. Supply the original IDW, DWG, or DXF as well when the recipient needs editable CAD data.

How to convert IDW with Autodesk Inventor

1. Open the .idw file in Autodesk Inventor using File → Open. Make the referenced .ipt and .iam files available if Inventor reports unresolved references.
2. Check every sheet, view, revision field, title-block value, annotation, and model reference. Update the drawing before exporting if its displayed data is not current.
3. Open the Output tab and choose Export → PDF. The exact menu arrangement varies by Inventor release; some versions also expose PDF export through File → Export.
4. Choose the current sheet or all sheets, specify the output filename, and retain the drawing’s intended paper size and orientation. Select vector output, line-weight, color, and font options as required by the export dialog.
5. Export the PDF, open it in a PDF viewer, and verify the page count, sheet order, title block, dimensions, line visibility, text, and revision information.

For a single-sheet or multi-sheet fallback, use File → Print and select a PDF printer such as Microsoft Print to PDF or Adobe PDF. Set the correct paper size, orientation, and plot area; disable options such as Fit to page when drawing scale must remain exact. Print each sheet as required, then combine the resulting PDFs with a trusted PDF tool.

For many drawings, use the Inventor release’s supported batch-publishing or automation tools, then inspect representative and high-risk files. Custom fonts, shaded views, section hatching, transparency, and unresolved external references can produce different results between files.

Online conversion options

Most general online converters do not reliably accept native IDW files. IDW is a proprietary CAD drawing format, and conversion may require referenced Inventor models and a compatible Inventor translation engine. Do not upload confidential engineering drawings unless a service explicitly confirms IDW support, explains how linked files are handled, and meets your organization’s security requirements.

If an online service explicitly lists .idw input, test it with a nonconfidential drawing before relying on it. For production drawings, local export from Autodesk Inventor is more predictable. A PDF printer is a local fallback, not an online conversion service, and can be used when direct PDF export is unavailable.

Quality and compatibility checks

Native Inventor PDF export is preferable to screenshots because it can retain vector geometry and selectable text. A PDF viewer can show a drawing correctly while a print dialog adds scaling; use 100% / Actual size for dimensional drawings and verify the printed scale with a known dimension or scale bar.

Unavailable fonts, unsupported symbols, line-weight settings, transparency, rasterized or shaded views, and printer-driver settings can alter appearance. Inspect fine dimensions and dense details at high zoom and, when necessary, on a test print. PDF measurement tools are not a substitute for controlled plotting at the drawing’s specified scale.
