Understanding IPJ and STEP file formats
IPJ files are Autodesk Inventor Project files, which store project settings, paths, and references for organizing and managing Inventor design files. They do not contain actual 3D model data but are essential for managing large design projects within Autodesk Inventor.
STEP files, with the extension .step or .stp, are standardized 3D model files based on the ISO 10303 standard. They are widely used for exchanging 3D CAD data between different software platforms, preserving geometry, assemblies, and product structure.
Can you convert IPJ to STEP directly?
Direct conversion from IPJ to STEP is not possible because IPJ files do not contain 3D geometry. Instead, you must open the actual Inventor part (.ipt) or assembly (.iam) files referenced by the IPJ project, and then export those to the STEP format.
How to convert Inventor files to STEP
To convert your Inventor models to STEP, follow these steps using Autodesk Inventor:
- Open Autodesk Inventor.
- Load your IPJ project file to set the correct project context.
- Open the desired .ipt (part) or .iam (assembly) file.
- Go to File → Export → CAD Format.
- Select STEP Files (*.stp, *.step) as the file type.
- Choose your export options and save the file.
Best software for IPJ to STEP conversion
The most reliable software for this process is Autodesk Inventor itself, as it natively supports both the project management (IPJ) and export to STEP. For users without Inventor, consider using Autodesk Inventor Viewer for viewing, but exporting requires the full Inventor application.
Alternative solutions
If you do not have access to Autodesk Inventor, you can ask a collaborator with Inventor to perform the export, or use a cloud-based service like Autodesk Fusion 360 (with proper import/export capabilities) to open Inventor files and export them as STEP.
