What the DWT format is

DWT is the AutoCAD drawing template format used by AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and compatible Autodesk CAD products. A template can contain layer definitions, dimension and text styles, layouts, title blocks, units, plotting settings, blocks, and sometimes drawing geometry.

You normally encounter DWT files when starting a new drawing from a company standard, an architectural or mechanical template, or an Autodesk-supplied template. What the BMP format is

BMP is an uncompressed or lightly compressed raster bitmap format supported by Windows image viewers, office applications, graphics editors, and many documentation systems. It is useful for screenshots, drawing previews, simple printed references, and workflows that accept only common pixel images.

BMP can represent the visible result at a chosen pixel size, but it does not retain layers, blocks, dimensions as objects, vector geometry, layouts, lineweights as editable properties, or AutoCAD template metadata. Its lack of effective compression often makes BMP files larger than PNG files at the same resolution.

How to actually convert DWT to BMP

Using AutoCAD

1. Make a copy of the DWT file if it contains a company template that must remain unchanged.
2. Open the file in AutoCAD with File → Open. If AutoCAD prompts for a drawing based on the template, accept the new drawing; the original DWT remains the template source.
3. Set the required drawing view, visual style, layer visibility, background, and layout. For a layout-based result, activate the layout tab that should appear in the image.
4. Run the AutoCAD command BMPOUT. Select the objects or visible drawing content requested by the command, then enter an output filename ending in .bmp.
5. Open the resulting BMP in an image viewer and check line visibility, text legibility, and cropping. Repeat the export at a larger display or output size if fine CAD annotations are unreadable.

If the installed AutoCAD release does not provide BMPOUT, plot the drawing to a supported raster output or export it to PDF, then rasterize the PDF in a desktop graphics application that supports BMP. The exact raster plotter names and available formats vary by AutoCAD release and installed plotter configuration.

Choose sufficient pixel dimensions for plotted text; enlarging a small BMP afterward does not restore lost detail. If the recipient accepts other formats, PNG usually provides the same raster clarity with a smaller file, while PDF preserves vector output more effectively for printing.
