How to convert slddrt to dxf file

Source format

SLDDRT is a SolidWorks sheet format file used for drawing templates, borders, title blocks, notes, and other sheet layout elements. It is not a geometry file and usually does not contain the actual drawing views or model data. In SolidWorks, an SLDDRT file is typically applied to a drawing sheet to control its appearance and standard layout.

Target format

DXF stands for Drawing Exchange Format. It is a widely supported CAD interchange format used for 2D drafting and, in some cases, limited 3D data. DXF is commonly used for CAD editing, CNC, laser cutting, and sharing drawings between different software packages.

Can you convert slddrt directly to dxf?

Usually, no. An SLDDRT file is a sheet format template, so there is generally no useful direct conversion to DXF by itself. To create a DXF, you normally need an actual SolidWorks drawing that uses the SLDDRT sheet format, then export that drawing to DXF.

If your only goal is to reuse the border or title block in another CAD program, you may need to recreate it manually or export the drawing sheet content from SolidWorks after applying the sheet format.

Best desktop method

SolidWorks is the most reliable way to produce a DXF from content associated with an SLDDRT file.

  1. Open SolidWorks.
  2. Create a new drawing or open an existing drawing.
  3. Apply the sheet format if needed using Right-click the drawing sheet → Properties or the sheet format settings.
  4. Make sure the drawing contains the views, notes, or geometry you want to export.
  5. Choose File → Save As.
  6. Set Save as type to DXF.
  7. Click Options to choose DXF version, units, layer mapping, and export settings.
  8. Save the file with a .dxf extension.

Important: if you only open the SLDDRT template itself, there may be nothing meaningful to export. The DXF comes from the drawing that uses the template, not from the template file alone.

Alternative desktop software

  • DraftSight can open and edit DXF files after export, which is useful for checking the result or making changes.
  • AutoCAD can also open DXF files for downstream editing and verification.
  • LibreCAD may be useful for viewing or editing simple 2D DXF files, though it will not convert SLDDRT directly.

Online converters

Be cautious with online converters. Reputable web converters rarely support .slddrt directly because it is a proprietary SolidWorks sheet format. If you already have a DXF exported from SolidWorks, an online DXF viewer or converter may help with secondary tasks, but it is not the best choice for converting SLDDRT itself.

If you must use an online service, first confirm that it supports SolidWorks drawing sheet formats or accepts the actual drawing file rather than the template alone. For sensitive engineering data, a desktop CAD workflow is safer.

Common limitations

  • SLDDRT is not geometry, so direct conversion is usually not meaningful.
  • Title blocks, borders, and notes may export differently depending on DXF settings and the receiving software.
  • Fonts, line types, and layers may not match perfectly across CAD programs.
  • Units and scale should be checked carefully before sending the DXF to manufacturing or CNC.
  • DXF version compatibility matters if the file will be used in older software or machines.

In short, the correct workflow is to use the SLDDRT file as a sheet format in SolidWorks, create or open the drawing, and export that drawing to DXF.

Simply put, it is impossible to convert SLDDRT to DXF directly.
Thus, there is no so-called slddrt to dxf converter or a free online .slddrt to .dxf conversion tool.
