Free online IFC to DXF converter

Teams convert IFC models when a CAD, CAM, laser-cutting, or legacy AutoCAD workflow requires a .dxf drawing instead of BIM data. The useful output is usually a plan, elevation, section, or simplified 3D geometry that can be edited as CAD entities.

What IFC files contain

IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is an open, vendor-neutral BIM format maintained by buildingSMART. Architects, engineers, contractors, fabricators, and facility teams use it to exchange models between applications without sharing native project files.

An IFC model can contain 3D geometry plus object relationships and properties: walls, slabs, doors, spaces, storeys, materials, classifications, quantities, systems, and element identifiers. Common file forms are .ifc, XML-based .ifcxml, and compressed .ifczip; IFC2X3 and IFC4 are common schema versions.

Revit, Archicad, Tekla Structures, Allplan, Vectorworks, OpenBuildings, Solibri, and other BIM tools can import or export IFC. Import quality varies by software and IFC schema, particularly for custom objects, complex geometry, and property sets.

What DXF files provide

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is Autodesk's CAD interchange format. It can store layers, lines, polylines, arcs, circles, text, dimensions, hatches, blocks, and certain 3D entities such as meshes and faces.

AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, many CAM applications, and machine-control workflows read DXF. A DXF is preferable to a raster PDF when recipients must snap to geometry, measure it, edit linework, or send profiles to CNC, laser, or cutting equipment.

DXF does not preserve IFC as a BIM model. The conversion normally retains geometric results, while object relationships, quantities, classifications, schedules, and most property data are lost.

Convert an IFC file to DXF

For a direct conversion, upload the .ifc file to 101convert.com, select DXF as the output format, run the conversion, and download the resulting .dxf file. Open the file in a CAD application before issuing or machining from it; an IFC model may convert to 3D geometry when the recipient actually needs a 2D drawing.

For a controlled 2D result, create the required plan, elevation, or section before export. If the originating BIM application and its native project file are available, export the required view directly from that application; this is usually cleaner than first exporting IFC and then converting it.

FreeCAD is a practical desktop option for IFC-derived 2D DXF output:

1. Open the IFC file with File → Open and inspect the imported storeys and elements.
2. Keep only the required floor, discipline, or objects visible. Use a top view for a plan, an orthographic side view for an elevation, or a section/cut view where available.
3. In the Draft workbench, create a 2D projection with Utilities → Shape 2D View after selecting the required objects. Directly exporting a complete 3D BIM model can produce an unnecessarily large and difficult-to-edit DXF.
4. Set the projection direction and hidden-line treatment, then confirm that a plan projection lies on the XY plane.
5. Check the document units in Edit → Preferences → General → Units. Agree on millimetres or metres with the DXF recipient before export.
6. Select the generated 2D projection and use File → Export to write a .dxf file.
7. Reopen the DXF in the receiving CAD or CAM software and inspect scale, layers, line types, closed profiles, and missing entities.

In Revit, an IFC can be opened or linked for reference, but DXF export is view-based. Prepare a suitable 2D view, then use File → Export → CAD Formats → DXF; export options determine layer mapping and which views or sheets are written.

Check geometry, scale, and compatibility

Do not assume that an IFC model contains drawing annotations. Text, dimensions, title blocks, hatch patterns, and line weights may not exist in the IFC source and may need to be added in the CAD application.

Walls and openings may become polylines, blocks, faces, or mesh edges rather than editable architectural objects. Curved and parametric BIM surfaces are often tessellated into many short segments, which can create large DXF files and unsuitable CNC contours.

Check closed loops, duplicate lines, self-intersections, and arc segmentation before sending a DXF to fabrication equipment. CAM software commonly requires closed, planar profiles and may reject splines, meshes, overlapping entities, or geometry at mixed elevations.

Verify units, scale, and coordinates. IFC models commonly use metres and can use survey coordinates far from 0,0; some CAD and CAM programs lose display or calculation precision with very large coordinates. Move a copy near the local origin only when retaining project coordinates is not required.

DXF layer mapping is not standardized. A converter may group entities by IFC class, storey, material, or place all geometry on one layer, so check walls, doors, grids, openings, and section lines separately. Retain the original IFC file when BIM properties or traceability must remain available.
