Convert PLN to DXF

Convert Archicad PLN files to DXF with the most reliable desktop workflow.

We can't read PLN files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into DXF:

How to convert pln to dxf file

Source format

PLN is the native project file format used by Graphisoft Archicad. It stores a full BIM project, including model geometry, views, layers, attributes, and project settings. Because it is a proprietary project format, it is not intended for direct CAD exchange.

Target format

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a widely supported CAD interchange format developed by Autodesk. It is commonly used to share 2D drawings and, in some cases, 3D geometry between CAD and drafting applications such as AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, and LibreCAD.

How to convert PLN to DXF

The most reliable way to convert .pln to .dxf is with Archicad, since it can open PLN files directly and export them with control over layers, units, line types, and scale.

  1. Open the .pln file in Archicad.
  2. Prepare the view you want to export, such as a floor plan, section, elevation, or detail.
  3. Use File → Save As or File → Interoperability → DXF-DWG, depending on your Archicad version.
  4. Select DXF as the output format.
  5. Choose the desired DXF version, units, layer mapping, and export scope.
  6. Save the file as .dxf.

If you only need a 2D drawing, exporting a specific view usually gives cleaner results than exporting the entire model. This is often the best choice for downstream CAD use.

Alternative software

Archicad is the primary desktop application for this conversion. Direct PLN-to-DXF support is uncommon in other programs because PLN is a proprietary Archicad format. Some workflows may involve opening the project in Archicad and then exporting to DXF, or using Archicad-compatible tools that can handle the exported data.

If you do not have Archicad, check whether the sender can export the project to DXF or to another exchange format such as DWG or IFC first. In many cases, that is more practical than trying to convert PLN with a third-party tool.

Online converters

Reputable online converters for .pln to .dxf are rare because PLN is a specialized BIM format. If you find a web service that claims support, verify that it preserves units, layers, and scale, and avoid uploading sensitive project data unless the service is trusted.

Quality and limitations

PLN to DXF is a translation, not a perfect one-to-one conversion. DXF is better suited to drawings than to full BIM data, so some Archicad-specific information will be lost, including parametric behavior, object intelligence, renovation status, and many project settings.

For best results, export from a specific view rather than the whole model. After export, check units, scale, line weights, pen colors, and layer names in the target CAD application. If the DXF will be used in AutoCAD or manufacturing software, test the file before final delivery.

If your goal is BIM collaboration rather than CAD drafting, IFC is often a better exchange format than DXF.
