How to actually convert 3DS to FCSTD
Using Blender and FreeCAD
- Open Blender and choose File → Import → 3D Studio (.3ds).
- Check the imported model’s scale, orientation, normals, and texture paths. Apply the required rotation or scale before export.
- Export the geometry as

OBJ generally preserves separate objects and material assignments better; STL is appropriate for a single printable mesh and does not retain materials. - Open FreeCAD and select File → Import to load the exported OBJ or STL. Alternatively, use the Mesh workbench’s import command.
- Inspect the result in the Model tree and repair obvious mesh defects with the Mesh workbench if necessary.
- Save the FreeCAD document with File → Save As, using a filename such as
model.FCStd.
Direct import in FreeCAD
Some FreeCAD installations or extensions may expose 3DS through File → Import. If .3ds is not listed, use the Blender-to-OBJ or Blender-to-STL route; changing the extension does not convert the file.
