Programs that do not read FreeCAD documents may require Autodesk 3D Studio's mesh format for viewing, rendering, or importing a model. Converting an FCStd file to 3DS therefore replaces FreeCAD's editable parametric document with a polygon mesh.

What the FCStd format is

.FCStd is FreeCAD's native document format, created by FreeCAD and used for parametric CAD models. It can contain Part and Part Design bodies, sketches, constraints, feature histories, spreadsheets, assemblies, materials, and multiple visible objects. FCStd files are normally encountered when a model was designed in FreeCAD or shared by someone using it.

The format preserves design intent: dimensions and constraints can be edited, and later features depend on earlier operations. That information is specific to FreeCAD and cannot be represented by a conventional 3D mesh format.

What the 3DS format is

.3ds is the binary Autodesk 3D Studio format. It stores triangulated geometry and can also store basic object names, materials, textures, cameras, and lights. It is useful for older rendering applications, model viewers, game tools, and software that accepts 3DS but does not import FreeCAD documents.

3DS has broad legacy compatibility, but it is an old format with restrictive object, material, name, and mesh-size limits. OBJ, FBX, glTF, or native CAD formats are usually better choices when the receiving application supports them.

How to convert FCSTD to 3DS

Direct export from FreeCAD

  1. Open the FCStd file in FreeCAD and make the required bodies or solids visible.
  2. Select the objects to export. Hide construction geometry, sketches, duplicate features, and reference objects that should not appear in the result.
  3. Use File → Export and check whether 3DS or 3D Studio is available in the file-type list. FreeCAD's available exporters vary by version and installed modules.
  4. Choose a destination ending in .3ds, confirm the export settings, and open the result in the target application to verify its scale, orientation, and materials.

FreeCAD to OBJ, then OBJ to 3DS

If the FreeCAD version does not offer a 3DS exporter, use a mesh intermediary:

  1. Open the model in FreeCAD and select the required solid or body.
  2. For controlled tessellation, switch to the Mesh workbench and use Mesh → Create mesh from shape. Use a smaller linear deviation and angular deviation for curved or highly detailed surfaces; smaller values produce more triangles and larger files.
  3. Export the resulting mesh with File → Export as .obj. Export each intended object separately if the receiving program needs separate object names or materials.
  4. Open the OBJ file in Blender, MeshLab, or another desktop mesh editor that supports both formats. In Blender, use File → Import → Wavefront (.obj).
  5. Check the model's units, normals, object grouping, and texture paths. In Blender, select the objects to include and use File → Export → 3D Studio (.3ds). If that entry is missing, enable or install the Autodesk 3DS format add-on available for that Blender version.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload only files that are suitable for third-party processing, because an online conversion requires transferring the FCStd file to the service.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • The conversion removes FreeCAD's feature tree, sketches, constraints, parametric dimensions, and editable solid history. Keep the original FCStd file as the authoritative CAD source.
  • Curved B-rep surfaces become triangles. Excessive tessellation creates unnecessarily large files, while coarse tessellation makes cylinders and fillets visibly faceted.
  • 3DS has legacy limits, including 16-bit-style mesh indexing in many implementations. Very large meshes may need to be split into several objects before export or may be truncated by the receiving application.
  • Object names and material names may be shortened or changed, and complex FreeCAD appearances, procedural materials, transparency, and texture settings may not survive. Copy texture files with the exported model and repair relative paths if necessary.
  • CAD applications commonly use millimetres, while some 3D applications interpret OBJ or 3DS units as metres or generic units. Set the import scale explicitly and measure a known dimension after conversion.
  • Inspect face normals and non-manifold areas after triangulation. Recalculate normals in the mesh editor if faces render black, disappear from one side, or show incorrect shading.
