CAD applications may require a BREP model to be converted before it can be opened in older 3D tools, game and visualization software, or applications that accept only polygon meshes. Converting it to 3DS changes the model from boundary-based solid geometry into a renderable triangle or polygon mesh.

What the BREP format is

BREP, or boundary representation, describes a CAD object through its faces, edges, vertices, surface definitions, and topology. Unlike a mesh, it can represent precise curves, trimmed NURBS surfaces, and watertight solids suitable for engineering edits and manufacturing workflows.

BREP files commonly use extensions such as .brep or .brp. Open CASCADE applications create this format, and it is also encountered when exchanging models from FreeCAD, CAD Exchanger, and other engineering programs that use Open CASCADE geometry. Some commercial CAD systems store equivalent BREP data inside proprietary formats rather than exposing a standalone BREP file.

What the 3DS format is

3DS is the legacy 3D Studio binary scene format associated with Autodesk 3D Studio. It stores polygon meshes, object names, basic materials, colors, texture references, cameras, and lights, although modern software often supports it only for import or export compatibility.

3DS is useful when an older visualization, rendering, asset-authoring, or game application specifically requires .3ds. Its main advantage is broad legacy support and straightforward mesh-based rendering. It does not preserve the editable parametric features, exact CAD surfaces, constraints, or solid-history information in a BREP model.

How to actually convert BREP to 3DS

Using FreeCAD

  1. Install a current FreeCAD release and open the Part workbench.
  2. Choose File → Open and load the .brep or .brp file. If the file contains several solids, inspect the model tree and decide which objects should be exported.
  3. Select the required shape or objects and choose Mesh → Create mesh from shape. Use a finer linear deviation and angular deviation for curved surfaces; use coarser values for a smaller file.
  4. Select the resulting mesh object and choose File → Export. Enter a filename ending in .3ds, then confirm the 3DS format if FreeCAD offers a format-selection dialog.
  5. Open the exported file in the target application and check scale, face normals, object separation, materials, and texture paths.

Some FreeCAD builds or installations may not expose 3DS as a mesh-export option. In that case, export an intermediate .obj or .stl, then use a desktop mesh application that can import that format and export .3ds. OBJ is usually preferable to STL when object names, materials, or texture coordinates matter.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the BREP file, select 3DS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .3ds file. Avoid uploading confidential engineering designs unless the project permits third-party processing.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion requires tessellation: the exact BREP surfaces are sampled into polygons. Increase mesh density around small fillets, holes, and tightly curved surfaces, but check the resulting polygon count because excessive tessellation can make the 3DS file slow or exceed the target application's limits.

3DS uses legacy 16-bit mesh indices, so a single mesh is commonly limited to about 65,535 vertices or faces, depending on the exporter and receiving program. Large CAD models may need to be split into multiple objects. The format also has limited support for modern materials, physically based shading, animation data, and long object names.

BREP files normally use precise model units, while 3DS files may not preserve unit metadata consistently. Set the intended units and verify a known dimension after import. Reversed normals, open surfaces, non-manifold geometry, missing textures, and unsupported material assignments should be repaired in the mesh or destination application after conversion.
