What the BREP format is

BREP, or boundary representation, describes a solid or surface through its faces, edges, vertices, topology, and geometry such as planes, cylinders, and NURBS surfaces. Files with .brep or .brp extensions are commonly produced by Open CASCADE-based applications, FreeCAD, CAD utilities, and engineering programs that use the Open CASCADE data model.

What the SVG format is

It stores lines, Bézier curves, paths, fills, strokes, text, and transforms, allowing graphics to scale without rasterization.

SVG cannot preserve a BREP model's solid topology, depth, parametric history, materials, or arbitrary 3D viewpoint. The output is normally a projected drawing, silhouette, section, or selected edge outline.

How to actually convert BREP to SVG

Using FreeCAD for a projected drawing

1. Install and open FreeCAD, then use File → Open to load the .brep file. If direct opening fails, use Part → Import CAD or import the file through the Part workbench.
2. Check the imported object in the 3D view. Repair or hide construction geometry if the model contains multiple solids or unwanted edges.
3. Switch to the TechDraw workbench and create a page with TechDraw → Insert Default Page.
4. Select the BREP object, choose TechDraw → Insert View, and set the required projection direction, scale, and visibility options. Use orthographic views for technical drawings or a camera-aligned view for a perspective-like outline.
5. Adjust line groups, hidden-line visibility, and page size. Add dimensions or annotations only if they are needed in the SVG.
6. Export the page with File → Export, choose SVG as the format, and save the result as model.svg. In some FreeCAD versions, right-clicking the TechDraw page provides the SVG export command.

BREP files can contain multiple solids, shells, or invalid topology. If conversion omits geometry, import each body separately, repair the shape in the CAD application, or export a simplified projection. An SVG export is not a substitute for STEP, IGES, or the original BREP when the recipient needs editable 3D CAD data.
