CAD software stores BREP models as precise boundary geometry, while web viewers, game engines, and many 3D applications expect the triangulated GLTF format. Conversion is needed when a CAD part must be displayed in a browser, imported into Blender, or shared as a compact scene rather than edited as parametric engineering data.
What the BREP format is
BREP means boundary representation. It describes a solid through faces, edges, vertices, surface equations, and topology, so curved geometry remains mathematically precise instead of being stored as triangles.
BREP files commonly use .brep or .brp extensions. Open CASCADE-based applications, FreeCAD, and some mechanical CAD systems create or read them; you may encounter them when exchanging individual parts between CAD programs or when working with Open CASCADE models.
What the GLTF format is
GLTF is a delivery format for 3D scenes. It stores polygon meshes, transforms, cameras, lights, materials, and sometimes animations in a structure designed for real-time rendering.
A .gltf file normally references separate binary and image files, while .glb packages the scene, mesh data, and textures into one binary file. GLTF is suitable for WebGL viewers, Three.js, Babylon.js, Blender, game engines, augmented-reality tools, and lightweight model sharing.
How to convert BREP to GLTF
Online conversion
- Open the BREP-to-GLTF converter on
101convert.com. - Upload the
.brepor.brpfile and start the conversion. - Download the generated
.gltfor.glbfile, including any accompanying.binand texture files when the output is not a single GLB.
This route requires no software installation and is suitable when the BREP contains ordinary solids that only need to be visualized or shared.
Desktop workflow with FreeCAD and Blender
- Open the file in FreeCAD with File → Open. If the model contains several solids, select the objects intended for export.
- Export a mesh through File → Export using
.objor.stl. OBJ is preferable when separate objects or basic material assignments must be preserved; STL stores geometry only. - In Blender, choose File → Import → Wavefront (.obj) or File → Import → STL.
- Set the required scene scale and orientation, then choose File → Export → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf).
- Choose
GLBfor a self-contained file, orglTF Separatewhen the mesh, binary buffer, and textures should remain separate.
Some recent FreeCAD builds expose GLTF directly under File → Export. If that option is available, select the BREP object and export to .gltf or .glb; otherwise use the FreeCAD-to-OBJ/STL-to-Blender workflow.
Quality and compatibility limitations
BREP-to-GLTF conversion is a tessellation process: exact planes and curved CAD surfaces become triangles. In FreeCAD, adjust the mesh deviation and angular-deflection settings before exporting; smaller deviation and angular values produce more polygons and better curvature, but increase file size and rendering cost.
GLTF does not retain BREP topology, feature history, sketches, constraints, parametric dimensions, or reliable CAD tolerances. STL also discards units and materials, so confirm the scene scale after import; OBJ preserves more structure but still does not preserve editable CAD features.
Inspect the exported model for reversed normals, gaps, non-manifold edges, missing textures, and incorrect orientation. Use .glb when deployment must involve one file, and keep the original BREP as the authoritative editable model.
