Source format overview

FCStd is the native project file format used by FreeCAD, an open-source parametric 3D CAD application. It stores the full design history, sketches, constraints, assemblies or part features, document settings, and often linked geometry or metadata. Because it is a working project format, FCStd is mainly used by engineers, makers, and designers who need to reopen and edit a model later rather than just share a finished mesh.

3MF is a modern 3D Manufacturing Format designed for additive manufacturing and 3D printing. Unlike older mesh formats, 3MF can store more print-relevant information such as units, materials, colors, build orientation, and multiple objects in one package. It is widely supported by slicers and 3D printing software.

The main advantages of 3MF are better interoperability, smaller and cleaner files than many legacy formats, and improved support for printer-ready data. It is commonly used for sending models to slicers, print farms, and 3D printing workflows.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable way to convert FCStd to 3MF is through FreeCAD, since FCStd is its native format and FreeCAD can export printable geometry to 3MF.

1. Open the .FCStd file in FreeCAD.
2. Make sure the model is complete and that the body or part you want to print is visible and active.
3. If needed, switch to the Mesh Design or Part workflow to ensure the geometry is suitable for export.
4. Select the object or objects you want to export.
5. Use File → Export.
6. Choose 3MF as the export format, then save the file with a .3mf extension.

If your FreeCAD version does not offer direct 3MF export for the specific object type, a practical fallback is to export a mesh format first, then convert that mesh to 3MF in a slicer or 3D-printing application that supports 3MF import and export. However, when available, direct export from FreeCAD is the preferred method because it avoids an extra conversion step.

For batch or scripted workflows, FreeCAD can also be automated with Python macros or command-line scripting, but the exact export capability depends on the installed FreeCAD version and workbench support.

Quality and compatibility notes

FCStd is parametric and editable, while 3MF is a manufacturing mesh/container format. That means the conversion is generally one-way: the resulting 3MF file will not preserve sketches, constraints, feature history, or other CAD-editable data from the FCStd project.

Conversion quality depends on how the model is tessellated into triangles. Fine details, curved surfaces, and small features may require higher mesh resolution to print accurately. If the export is too coarse, the 3MF may look faceted; if it is too dense, the file may become larger and slower to slice.

Also note that some 3MF consumers support only a subset of the standard. Basic geometry is broadly compatible, but advanced data such as colors, materials, or multiple build items may not transfer perfectly between all slicers and printers. Before printing, it is a good idea to open the 3MF in your slicer and verify scale, units, wall thickness, and manifold geometry.
